Sahana ([undefined] Error: {{Langx}}: no text (help)) also known as Ugra Kshatriya (Bengali: উগ্রক্ষত্রিয়) is a Bengali Hindu agricultural caste found in the districts of Bardhaman, Birbhum and Bankura.[1]

History

[edit]

According to Aguris themselves, they are a mixed caste born out of the union between the Sadgops rulers of Gopbhum and the Punjabi Khetri rulers of Burdwan.[1][2] McLane believes that Oldham has been misled by the claim made by the Aguris. He cites Mukundaram to prove the presence of the Aguris much before the arrival of the Khetris in Burdwan.[3]

The Brihaddharma Purana mentions a caste was Ugra among the higher mixed caste, while the Brahmavaivarta Purana mentions a caste called Agari among the pure Shudras. Ballal Sen classified the Aguris among the Navashakhas.
