Originally launched on May 17, 2001, the 10th anniversary of the WWW, Independents Day was born to raise awareness of the independent web.

This is INDEPENDENTS DAY original manifesto launched on May 17, 2001. As ID3: ReBirth takes flight - we will build upon the manifesto foundation emcompassing new goals and objectives which are sketched out in the about ... page.

What it is

INDEPENDENTS DAY is a worldwide project celebrating independent content and design on the web. It’s supported by an informal network of designers, artists, writers, editors, developers, and producers who create content and design to enrich the web (and not necessarily their bank accounts).

Who belongs

INDEPENDENTS DAY is you. If you create your own site and want to participate, join us! The signup page will be available soon.

What we do

WE CREATE online magazines, exploratory spaces and galleries, personal and collaborative projects. Some independent sites have a rough–hewn, do–it–yourself aesthetic; others are slicker than many commercial sites; still others push creative and technological boundaries. Some are big and bold, some quietly intimate. What unites us is that we work to delight ourselves and others, rather than to satisfy the needs of investors or advertisers.

INDEPENDENTS DAY is a non–hierarchical organization. We have no dues or fees, no marketing consultants, no plans for world domination. We do not hope to change or influence any existing businesses or practices. We seek only to raise awareness of the quality and diversity of independent web content, and to encourage others to support, create, or contribute to independent content sites.

Why ID

We believe that the web is a remarkable medium for new forms of art, personal storytelling, and all manner of information and services whose rewards are not necessarily financial.

The independent content scene is alive and well, but is largely unknown by the general web-using public.

We seek to support each other as a community, and to increase, if possible, the general public’s awareness not only of existing independent sites, but of the fact that they can create their own.

INDEPENDENTS DAY is a wholly non-owned, non-commercial, non-subsidiary of nothing.

Who started ID?

Launched 17 May 2001 on the 10th anniversary of the WWW, the original concept was born and brought about by the collaboration of 3 people.
