This volume aims at investigating the reasons why, in Turkey, individual memory and construction ... more This volume aims at investigating the reasons why, in Turkey, individual memory and construction of subjectivity (both intended in the broad sense) go beyond the boundaries of the individual in order to incorporate matters concerning national identity. The "writings on the self", be them confessions, memoirs, autobiographical or biographical novels, have been chosen as tools for the comprehension of the construction mechanisms of individual and collective memory. The issues related to the building of the modern Turkish nation, with its traumatic historical events and the approaches to the theme of memory by those who were excluded from the dominant and hegemonic narrative, constitute the core themes around which the authors' reflection develops.

His new book, Prisoner of the Infidels: The Memoir of an Ottoman Muslim in Seventeenth-Century Europe will be released in summer 2021 from the University of California Press. Casale is also the author of award-winning Ottoman Age of Exploration (Oxford, 2011), and since 2010 has served as executive editor of the Journal of Early Modern History.

In recent years, an increasing number of studies on diplomatic gifts in the Ottoman context have ... more In recent years, an increasing number of studies on diplomatic gifts in the Ottoman context have emphasised, through different approaches, the central role played by gifts in the performance of diplomatic interactions. The articles by Hedda Reindl-Kiel, Michał Wasiucionek and Rosita D'Amora that make up this thematic section, Emotion, Diplomacy and Gift Exchanging Practices in the Ottoman Context, take a step in a new direction by posing challenging questions regarding the emotional implications of the processes of exchanging gifts in the framework of Ottoman diplomatic encounters.

Between August 1741 and the spring of 1743, following the conclusion of a treaty between the Kin... more Between August 1741 and the spring of 1743, following the conclusion of a treaty between the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the Porte, Naples became the stage of a series of attentively choreographed events starring two special guests: Hacı Hüseyin Efendi, an envoy of the sultan Mahmud I and an elephant, presented as a sultan's gift to the King Charles of Bourbon. Both guests became a public spectacle, aroused great curiosity, and generated many written and visual responses. Resorting to both the Neapolitan court-sponsored textual and visual reconstructions and to unpublished archival documents, this article shows how the both on- and off-stage performances arranged to present the envoy, and the sultan's gifts, had the clear intent of leaving a long-lasting impression on the new Ottoman ally, but also aimed to assert the power of the Bourbon king inspiring sentiments of wonder, admiration and devotion in his subjects.

In 1683 Count Luigi Ferdinando Marsili volunteered for the troops that Leopold I of Habsburg was ... more In 1683 Count Luigi Ferdinando Marsili volunteered for the troops that Leopold I of Habsburg was recruiting against the army of Mehmet IV, who was about to besiege Vienna. Marsili, though, during the skirmishes preceding the siege, was wounded, captured and brought as a slave to the Ottoman camp where he learned how to prepare coffee and served as a kahveci (coffee maker). After his ransom, in 1685, he sent to press in Vienna a short treatise entitled Historia medica del cavé (‘Medical history of coffee’). In this work, entirely dedicated to coffee, he combined, according to the empirical spirit of his time, the knowledge of scholarship, with his own personal observations and firsthand experience he had gained during his slavery. In the central part of his work, Marsili entrusts the task of scientifically explaining the origins, the characteristics and the virtues of the coffee to the Ottoman man of letters Ḥusayn Efendi (Hezārfenn) who Marsili had meet during his stay in Constantin...

By analyzing the texts of these authors writing about the self outside of their "mother tongue", this article addresses the issue of language-in this case Eng-lish-as a negotiated space for one's own multiple identities, both with local and Western audiences. In particular, it examines to what extent the choice, however conscious, of using a foreign language engenders an identity break, a separation of the author from the world in which her memories were originally produced. Furthermore, this article seeks to determine the traumas that could motivate or arise from this choice. By analyzing the texts of these authors writing about the self outside of their “mother tongue”, this article addresses the issue of language – in this case Eng- lish – as a negotiated space for one’s own multiple identities, both with local and Western audiences. Interfaith love is a compelling topic in societies where faith is a decisive mark of identity, an... more Interfaith love is a compelling topic in societies where faith is a decisive mark of identity, and culture is continuously shaped by interreligious coexistence and conflicts. In Medieval Islamic imagery the ‘religious other’, either boy or girl, has a prominent place in erotic poetry and love romances. The theme went through significant reshaping in the early modern period, when the confrontation between the Ottomans and Europe opened wide spaces for uncertain identities across contested frontiers. Eventually, it has taken on distinctive new forms in contemporary societies within the fragile framework of the Middle Eastern national identities but also in the West where issues related to interfaith love and marriages are increasingly part of the public debate.

This international conference seeks to explore, through a diachronic, interdisciplinary and comparative approach, how interfaith love is perceived and represented in historical, religious, legal, literary and artistic sources, both Islamic and non-Islamic. Relevant materials will be approached from multiple perspectives, and preferably in a comparative way, in order to bring out their historical, cultural and societal implications, and to analyse the way they shaped cultural representations both in the past and in the present. Narratives of interfaith love mirror a society’s understanding of cultural cross-influence, with its ‘dangers’ and ‘seductions’. As interfaith love concerns all the religious cultures involved in the process, the Islamic view will be complemented with that of other relevant cultures intertwined with Islam. This conference seeks to bring into focus the many facets of representation of this theme and trace its metamorphoses at turning points in history.

The main research questions we aim to address include:
- What are the different perceptions and representations of interfaith love in the various kinds of textual and visual sources produced both within and outside the Islamicate world?
- How social norms and boundaries shape and define the ‘performances’ of love affairs between the members of two different religious communities or two different sects within Islam (e.g. between Alevi and Sunni or Sunni and Shiite Muslims)?
- What are the gender implications of interfaith love and, in particular, how the representation of homoerotic love is intertwined with that of the ‘beloved infidel’?
- Why is the beloved in Islamic mystical-erotic poetry often of a different faith?
