Parent and Family Philanthropy

Parents Philanthropy Board  /  Membership  /  Supporting Maryland  /  Contact /  PPB Chair Message

Family involvement and philanthropy are cherished traditions at Maryland and a positive way to partner with UMD. Your investment in UMD makes a difference in our students’ lives and helps create excellence for our Terp community.

The office of Parent and Family Philanthropy encourages you to explore the many ways you can engage with UMD and support our students with your annual gift, a multi-year or planned gift for scholarships and programs or support through membership in the Parents Philanthropy Board.

Parents Philanthropy Board

The Parents Philanthropy Board (PPB) offers parents and families of UMD undergraduates a unique opportunity to fully engage in the life of the university and play a vital role in enhancing the Terp student experience.

PPB members gain a deeper understanding of UMD through their advisory partnership with the Vice President for Student Affairs and interaction with university leadership and faculty, amazing students and other engaged families.

In addition, PPB members:
  • Participate with an annual gift of $5,000 or more to the Terp Family Fund
  • Welcome new UMD families and promote parent involvement and support
  • Host or attend regional or on-campus events
  • Enjoy recognition benefits of special programs and events, including reserved section Commencement seating
  • Attend two PPB meetings during Family Weekend (October) and Maryland Day (April)

Joining the PPB is an excellent way to be involved, informed and connected! Please contact Kyra Lyons, Director, Parent and Family Philanthropy at [email protected] or 301-405-1694.

PPB Chair Message

A message from the Chairs of the UMD Parents Philanthropy Board:

Michael '89 and Nana Haney P'24, P'26, P'28 Chairs, Parents Philanthrophy BoardParents and families are highly valued and important members of the University of Maryland community—without your involvement and engagement, there would be no community.

Through our involvement with the Parents Philanthropy Board (PPB), our family has experienced a multitude of informative and meaningful experiences with university leadership, faculty and staff, and other engaged parents like you. With all three of our children having attended or currently attending UMD, our Terrapin pride has grown exponentially and has deepened our appreciation for the tremendous opportunities UMD offers our children. We are grateful to be part of a community whose work impacts the student experience now and sets the course for future generations.

PPB members share in our enthusiasm and generously give their time, talent and resources to benefit all Terps—past, present and future. We deeply appreciate our current members and are excited to welcome new families as we lead the efforts of this esteemed parent group over the course of the next year.

Partner with us! Please accept our invitation to join the PPB and enrich your family's Terp experience.

Go Terps!

“We have always been active in our children's education. So when our oldest child went to college, the Parent Philanthropy Board was a great way to become involved with UMD in a way that supports all students, not just our own. Go Terps!”

Family Weekend

Family Weekend is an independent and self-supported annual event for University of Maryland families, provided by the Office of Family Engagement and the Division of Student Affairs.

Supporting Maryland

The active engagement of parents and families is one of the great strengths of our Maryland community.

Terp Family Fund
All Terp parents and family members are encouraged to join in the UMD tradition of giving by making an annual gift to the Terp Family Fund, which provides critical funding for special projects, initiatives and programs benefitting all undergraduate students. The Terp Family Fund allows the Vice President for Student Affairs the flexibility to direct support new priorities and unexpected needs during the academic year.

Senior Family Legacy
As graduation day approaches, many Terp families recognize their student’s hard work and dedication by making a Legacy Gift in their honor. These tribute gifts express support and gratitude to the University and to the faculty and staff who have been meaningful in the exceptional and transformational education of their students.

DO GOOD

Introducing The Nation's First Do Good Campus Transforming Idealism into Impact

Academics

Spanning 12 schools and colleges, Maryland offers more than 300 degree-granting programs, many of them ranked among the best in the country. Our faculty includes two Nobel laureates, three Pulitzer Prize winners, 58 members of the national academies and scores of Fulbright scholars. And our students, who include the highest achievers in the state and nation, enjoy experiences unique to our location just outside the nation’s capital, including internships, research, and leadership and service opportunities.

Research and Innovation

The University of Maryland is one of the world’s premier research institutions. With our strategic location and scores of partnerships with government and businesses, UMD conducts groundbreaking research on some of the biggest challenges facing our global community, including cybersecurity and terrorism, bioengineering, public health equity, food safety and climate change. We strive to discover new knowledge and put it to work through innovation and entrepreneurship, advancing economic development and transforming lives.

The newly launched Innovation Gateway will guide you to the resources, programs, partners, and spaces you need to activate and scale your fearless ideas into innovations that launch new ventures, catalyze growth, and advance economic development.

Arts

At the University of Maryland, the arts, the humanities and the sciences intersect to address important societal issues and shed new light on the human experience. Our vibrant campus arts community collaborates with local and national cultural organizations such as the Phillips Collection, Kennedy Center and Folger Shakespeare Library. Student and faculty artists, designers, historians, writers and performers are exploring new media, presenting new perspectives, investigating new techniques and engaging new audiences.

Athletics

Home of the Terrapins, the University of Maryland has one of the nation’s most recognizable and successful athletics programs. More than 550 student-athletes compete each year in 20 intercollegiate sports—12 for women and eight for men. Since 2005 alone, Maryland has won 19 national championships, including NCAA titles in women’s basketball, men’s soccer, men's lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, and field hockey. Since joining the Big Ten Conference in 2014, UMD has won a combined 32 regular season and tournament championships. Fear the Turtle!

Student Life

The Terp experience extends beyond classrooms, labs and studios. It encompasses residence halls and dining halls, clubs and sports, fraternities and sororities, campus events and performances, and countless off-campus destinations. Maryland touts 800-plus student organizations, dozens of prestigious living and learning communities, and countless other ways to get involved. Students here can create a unique identity and grow as individuals, even as they’re part of a close-knit and diverse community.
