Angry one-word response and a happy chairman - how Manchester United reacted after Wolves defeat

Wolves' chairman Jeff Shi was milling about outside of the dressing rooms at Molineux and had a huge smile on his face. The West Midlands journalist in the mixed zone was offered a Wolves player to speak with but no Manchester United players were in the mood to chat about the result.

United's defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day meant they slipped down to 14th in the Premier League table and Ruben Amorim was asked about the prospect of relegation during his press conference.

It is surreal covering United at the moment but most observers saw a difficult season coming in the summer after Ineos wrongly decided to back a manager who needed to be sacked.

Ruben Amorim has inherited a squad that doesn't align with his philosophy and is attempting to put square pegs in round holes. Most of the players Amorim has at his disposal aren't good enough, so outgoings at the end of the season are inevitable and can't come soon enough.

Bruno Fernandes' red card gave United a mountain to climb against Wolves and the club captain was the first on the team bus after having an early shower. Rasmus Hojlund was the next to leave the dressing room and bluntly said "no" when he was asked if he had a spare minute to chat.

Christian Eriksen is one of the politest members of the squad and said "sorry, not today," when he faced the same enquiry. Eriksen replaced Manuel Ugarte after the hour mark against Wolves and he might not even ask for a contract extension given the current state of the club.

Matthijs de Ligt was an unused substitute and headed for the exit door next, but he stopped to help the United staff who were packing away equipment by moving something from the floor. It was a small gesture but a lot of Premier League players are entitled and wouldn't do that.

Alejandro Garnacho was wrapped up warm and also had the most layers on before the game, while Leny Yoro left with his hood up after another tough introduction to English football.

Harry Maguire and Diogo Dalot had the decency to acknowledge my question as they left, but Lisandro Martinez had a glum look on his face and didn't reply when he was spoken to.

Martinez said he believed United were "playing well" after the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth but there have been merely glimmers to cling on to and the results have continued to be bad.

Amorim was busy on his phone as he left for the team bus and the burden of managing the most scrutinised club is starting to weigh on him, naturally. He looked fresh, invigorated and still had a tan when he arrived last month but the demands of the job are already taking a toll.

It's understood the 39-year-old didn't say anything to his players in the dressing room, although that is Amorim's preference as he allows his players hold their own debrief if they wish.

Antony made an impact from the bench when he came on and looked bright. However, someone like Roy Keane might have taken issue with him leaving Molineux with a Wolves' players shirt considering the result. It was likely to be a shirt of one of the Brazilian players and swapping shirts is standard, but you can imagine Keane laying into Antony in a Sky Sports studio for doing it.

As I eventually left the stadium, the Wolves member of staff who welcomes journalists to the media entrance said he can't believe how United are. Amorim has a heck of a job on his hands.
