Good Internal Control Practices and Fraud Prevention Tips (Q0390)
Live online session
Class content will be delivered via live online Zoom session(s) with supplemental materials.
Description:
The repercussions of employee embezzlement or a similar scandal that could result from the lack of internal controls would be nightmarish for any college or university. The impact of such loss is wide-ranging, from disruption of research and educational activities to the incurring of legal and personnel action costs, increased regulation, and adverse publicity. To prevent this, faculty, administrators, and staff must understand internal controls. This course describes internal controls (what they are, what they do, and why they are necessary). Course participants learn how to recognize early warning signs of fraud and gain knowledge of simple procedures to implement immediately and reduce risks. Content includes review of case studies of recent frauds that have taken place at the UW.
