Bhagalpur: Governor-cum-chancellor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Thursday inaugurated the multi-purpose indoor stadium at Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU) campus to encourage sporting activities among students, teachers and others.
The four-crore indoor stadium was constructed under the Khelo India scheme of the Sports Authority of India, ministry for youth affairs and sports, govt of India, with the objective of mass participation of people and promoting excellence in sports as part of the national programme for development of sports.
Apart from inaugurating the KIS, the governor also inaugurated the yoga and physiotherapy centres at the TMBU’s health centre premises, constructed at the cost of nearly seven crores, to promote yoga and improve the quality of life of students and teachers. He also inaugurated a ‘mahila shiksha’, training and development centre at Marwari College premises under the TMBU, to promote education among girls and women.
The governor was accompanied by senior officials, including those from the education department and the university.
Speaking on the occasion, Arlekar said the multi-purpose indoor stadium was built under the Khelo India scheme, which aims to create and upgrade sports infrastructure and promote sporting activities through sports competitions and talent development.
“It is also part of the Fit India Movement to promote a healthy environment in academic institutions through sports,” the governor said, adding that Khelo India centres and sports academies are being promoted by the central and state govts for the students and other stakeholders of the academic institutions across the nation.
He added, “There is no dearth of money in developing the infrastructures, research wings and laboratories at academic institutions, including the sports infrastructures. Both central and state govts are committed to giving a facelift to the academic institutions along with the development of sporting activities at the universities.”
Present on the occasion were TMBU VC Prof Jawahar Lal, JD(U) MP Ajay Kumar Mandal, MLC Sanjiv Singh, senate and syndicate members, besides a large number of students, teachers, university officials and staff along with officials from the district administration.
