Madurai:
Madras high court has sought a response from the Centre and state on a plea seeking a direction to appoint a director and administrative officer for Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji's Sarasvati Mahal Library.
The first bench of Chief Justice K R Shriram and justice Mohammed Shaffiq was hearing a public interest litigation filed by an advocate, V Jeevakumar.
The petitioner stated that the library was the royal palace library when the Nayak Kings were in rule and was enriched by Rajah Serforji II between 1798 and 1832. In 1918, the library was taken over by the govt and made a public library.
He stated that the posts of director and administrative officer were vacant. The Thanjavur district collector and chief educational officer are holding additional charge of the posts. He said that an RTI reply states that 32 posts of the total 46 sanctioned posts were vacant. All the 22 CCTV cameras inside the library are non-functional.
He submitted a representation to fill up the vacant posts for proper functioning of the library. Since the same is yet to be considered, Jeevakumar moved court.
