Lucknow: Patients or attendants at hospitals must not throw trash in bins meant for biomedical waste, as it spreads infections, urged experts at the 24th annual conference of the Indian Society of Hospital Waste Management, hosted by environment department of KGMU, on Saturday.
Around 500 delegates, including doctors, students and paramedical staff of KGMU and other medical institutions, attended the conference. Prof Ravi Prakash said, "Visitors at hospitals should throw all waste only at designated spots or in bins, as it not only increases burden on waste plants but also makes it difficult to process biomedical waste, raising risk of infections spreading."
Head of environment department at KGMU, Prof Parvez Khan, highlighted the significance of this initiative at the IshwaCon 2024, saying, "The department is training healthcare workers to ensure proper waste segregation and disposal. Once implemented, this system will reduce risk of infections and environmental pollution."
Prof D Himanshu of KGMU said, "The university has trained healthcare workers in 20 districts and focus now is to expand the training programme to cover all districts in the state. KGMU has partnered with the National Botanical Research Institute to establish compost pits for disposal of green waste, leaves, flowers, and plant debris."
