NEW DELHI: Taking cognisance of a TOI news report published on Tuesday, Delhi Jal Board (DJB)’s vice-chairman Somnath Bharti met the residents of Patparganj’s Sahvikas Society to understand the problem of water contamination that they have been facing for past three months.
“After reading the report titled ‘As summer peaks, residents urge DJB to address water woes in city’, the DJB vice-chairman spoke to the residents of Patparganj societies that come under Vishwas Nagar assembly constituency.
He said that following the policy of zero tolerance on this matter, DJB officials have been instructed to look into the matter of contaminated water supply or short water supply in the societies of Patparganj on priority,” said a statement from DJB.
Bharti also directed DJB officials to check the leakage of the water pipelines in the area. “People of Delhi deserve clean drinking water supply as it’s a matter of public health and proper utilisation of public money. Water pipelines in all the societies in Patparganj that face the water contamination issues need to be checked,” he said.
Bharti further said a special team would be in Patparganj on Wednesday to collect water samples from all the 10 societies between 6am and 8am. I will be meeting the residents of the area on Thursday to take stock of the remedial work done by DJB officials, he added.
Smita Mishra, a DJB consumer from Sahvikas Society, informed Bharti that the societies of Patparganj have been receiving contaminated water supply since February this year. The situation needs urgent attention, Mishra said.
The DJB vice-chairman also called up the Public Works Department engineer concerned, as the water supply pipeline runs through two drains that come under PWD. He instructed the engineer that the drain should be desilted to help identify the point where water is getting contaminated. Currently, the drain is choked and the wastewater stagnated.
