The Tuscan countryside around San Gimignano is a popular base for families exploring Tuscany.
And it makes sense – from San Gimignano, you can be in Florence, Siena, and Chianti in less than an hour, and you can be at the beach or in the Val d’Orcia in less than 90 minutes.
And, we can’t forget that the area is gorgeous – think rolling hills dotted with vineyards, forest, and charming villages.
A question I’m asked frequently – “Where should we stay?” Whether you’d like to stay in San Gimignano or in the surrounding countryside, I’ve got you covered. And I’ll also give you info that will help you make that decision.
So, Andiamo – Let’s go!

Map of Where to Stay in San Gimignano with Kids
The Main Thing to Decide On – Staying in the Center or the Countryside
You can either stay in the center of San Gimignano or in the surrounding countryside. Both are good options with kids.
Staying in San Gimignano – The best part about staying in the center is you can walk everywhere and you can go back to your room when needed (to change a diaper, to take a midday break from the heat, etc). The main disadvantage is if you want to take daytrips, you’ll need to get to/from your car and deal with parking and you will not have a pool.
Staying in the Countryside – A Tuscany countryside stay is relaxing, peaceful, and usually offers a place for kids to run around and play. You may also have access to kid-friendly amenities like a swimming pool or farm animals. The disadvantage is you’ll need to drive to/from the center of town for visits, dinner in San Gimingnano, etc.
Helpful Tip: The biggest mistake I see people make when booking lodging outside of San Gimignano is thinking you can walk into town from your hotel/apartment/agriturismo. If you’re not staying in San Gimignano, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to walk into town. The roads are busy and narrow and not safe to walk on. So, although you can easily walk 1 kilometer, you won’t want to on the roads around San Gimignano.

Here are a few recommendations for a family stay in and around San Gimignano:
Hotel Leon Bianco – Leon Bianco’s location doesn’t get much better – in Piazza della Cisterna. You can walk everywhere in town and head back to your room when your kids (or you) are tired. There isn’t hotel parking but you can enter the ZTL to drop off and load luggage. Rooms and apartments. Views include Piazza della Cisterna and the Tuscan countryside. There’s no on-site laundry but the hotel has a 24-hour service that costs €20 for a bag (washed and dried).
Agriturismo Poggiacolle – Agriturismo with rooms and apartments, swimming pool, views of San Gimignano. Extras like cooking classes and helping with the grape or olive harvests. And, it’s just a 5-minute drive from the Giubileo parking lot at the southern tip of San Gimignano. Washing machine available for mid-trip laundry needs.
Agriturismo Raccianello – Agriturismo Raccianello has apartments with views of San Gimignano, a swimming pool, a small playground, and expansive grassy areas. It’s just a 10-minute drive from the Giubileo parking lot.
Agriturismo Casanova di Pescille – This agriturismo has apartments and rooms, a swimming pool, an on-site restaurant, cooking classes, and it’s just a 5-minute drive from the Giubileo parking lot.
Agriturismo Antico Casolare – Casolare is just a 5-min walk to San Gimignano. If you stay here, you’ve got the best of both worlds – you can stroll the streets of San Gimignano, and then walk back to your countryside agriturismo. However, note that there’s no pool, which can be tough with kids in the hot summer. Solution: Buy squirt guns and let your kids play in the lawn! The property has a triple room and two doubles, and there are views of San Gimignano.
Agriturismo Fratelli Vagnoni – Agriturismo Fratelli Vagnoni is a working farm (mamma and papà, be sure to sample the wines!), and it’s a great option if you’re on a budget. The property has apartments for up to 5 people or rooms for up to 3 people. Your kids will enjoy the swimming pool and small playground.
Agriturismo Macinatico – This place is a little bit further away from San Gimignano, but it’s great for bigger families or families traveling together – its apartments can hold 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or even 10 people. It’s a family-friendly site with amenities like high chairs, cribs, and on-site laundry (washer and dryer). There’s also a swimming pool, and you won’t get tired of the views of San Gimignano.
Fattoria Antonella – At Fattoria Antonella, you can rent rooms or apartments. It’s a working farm and has a relaxed, casual feel. Kids can see the farm animals, play in the grassy area, and enjoy the swimming pool.
La Collegiata – La Collegiata is the ‘fanciest’ hotel close to San Gimignano and your best option for a luxury countryside stay. It’s got lovely views of San Gimignano and the countryside. I’ve stayed here with families for work, and kids loved the pool, the building (even though it’s a monastery, it gives off castle vibes), and cracking open pine nuts. As a parent, it’s a pricey option, but it allows you to be more hands-off – you can eat meals here, send your laundry to be done, etc.
Helpful Tip: Don’t stress if these places are booked – there are plenty of amazing places to stay in and around San Gimignano with your family!
