Windsor Theatre, Salford
It opened as the Royal Hippodrome Salford but was known principally as the Salford Hippodrome. It was built for William Broadhead and sons as part of their circuit of seven Manchester suburban theatres. it was mainly a variety theatre and played host to many of the country’s top variety stars.
In the 1950s it proved difficult to attract audiences and like many similar theatres it resorted to booking nude revues. In 1955 the theatre was sold and renamed the Windsor Theatre with a view to it housing a repertory company. However this proved equally difficult to sustain and the theatre was eventually demolished in 1962 to be replaced by a tower block.
