Edit captions

You can manually change the text and timestamps of your captions or use caption editing software or services.

Edit caption text
Note: If you’re editing captions created automatically, a new caption track that includes your revisions will be generated.
  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, select Subtitles .
  3. Click the video you’d like to edit.
  4. Find the language you'd like to edit, hover over the details under "Subtitles" and then select Duplicate and Edit .
  5. Click inside any line in the caption track panel and edit the text.
  6. Click PUBLISH when you're done.
Edit caption timing

You can edit the timing on your caption tracks directly in the YouTube captions editor or by downloading your caption files.

Use the YouTube captions editor

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, select Subtitles .
  3. Click the video you’d like to edit.
  4. Find the language you'd like to edit, hover over the details under "Subtitles" and then select Duplicate and Edit .
  5. Select a specific line in the caption track panel:
    • Adjust caption timing by editing the two timestamp boxes beside the caption track. The box at the top is the start time, and below it is the end time.
    Note: If you’re not seeing timestamps, select EDIT TIMINGS.
  6. Click PUBLISH when you're done.

Download & edit caption files

You can edit timestamps by downloading the caption file and using a plain text (.txt) editing program like TextEdit or Notepad to make edits.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, select Subtitles .
  3. Click the video you’d like to edit.
  4. Find the language you’d like to edit, hover over the details under “Subtitles” and then click Options .
  5. Select Download and then choose a file format.
  6. Your browser will download a file containing the captions track. Edit the file and save it.
  7. Upload the edited captions to your video.

Remove captions

To stop captions from showing on your video, you can delete them completely from your video and Google Account.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, select Subtitles .
  3. Find the language you’d like to delete, hover over the details under “Subtitles” and then click Delete .
  4. You’ll be asked to confirm that you want to delete the captions. Click DELETE CAPTIONS.
Note: Once the automatic captions are deleted for a video, you cannot turn them back on.
