Mark a conversation as read or unread

In Google Chat, you can mark conversations as unread to return to them later. You can also mark a conversation as read without opening it.

When you mark a conversation as unread, a dot shows up next to it in your conversation list.

Change a conversation to read or unread

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  1. In your conversation list, to the right of the conversation, click More options .
  2. Click Mark as read or Mark as unread .

Tips: Other ways to mark a conversation as read or unread include:

  • At the top of a DM or space, click the conversation name and then Mark as read or Mark as unread.
  • For individual messages in a conversation, point to the message and then click More actions and then Mark as unread. This adds an “Unread” line above the message in the conversation.

Locate your unread conversations

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  1. On the left, click Home.
  2. At the top right, click Unread.
