How your existing storage works with Google One

Google One is a subscription plan that gives you more storage to use across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.

How much storage you get with a standard Google Account

Every Google Account comes with 15 GB of cloud storage at no charge, which is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.

When you upgrade to a paid Google One monthly subscription, your total storage increases to 100 GB or more, depending on the plan you choose. You also get extra member benefits and access to support from Google experts -- all of which you can share with your family.

Special offers and promotions sometimes offer more storage.

How much storage comes with a Google One plan

Your Google One storage is added on top of the 15 GB of storage included with your Google Account. If you previously got extra storage as part of a promotion, you'll keep that storage, too.

Note: When your promotion expires, your personal storage totals go back to what they were before the promotion.

Example: Switch to 100 GB storage plan

Your Google Account comes with storage at no charge:

  • 15 GB cloud storage

If you buy storage with a Google One membership, it adds to that total:

  • 15 GB default storage
  • 85 GB storage from Google One membership

----------------------------------------------------

100 GB of total storage

If you receive a promotional deal (such as 50 GB of storage from buying a Chromebook), that adds to your storage total:

  • 15 GB default storage
  • 50 GB storage from any promotional deals*
  • 85 GB storage from Google One membership

----------------------------------------------------
150 GB of total storage

*If the promotions end, participation will no longer be available.

Example: Storage upgrade with family sharing

Your Google Account comes with storage:

  • 15 GB of personal storage per person (no charge)

The 3 relatives you add to your family have Google Account storage too:

  • 15 GB personal storage per person (no charge)

With a 100 GB storage upgrade via Google One, all members of your family share 100 GB:

  • 15 GB personal storage per person (no charge)
  • 85 GB of Google One storage (with monthly subscription charge), shared by all 4 family members of your family group
Example upgrade from paid Drive storage to Google One

Before Google One:

150 GB of total storage

  • 100 GB paid Drive storage
  • 50 GB storage from Chromebook, Safer Internet Day, or other promotions*

After upgrade to 200 GB Google One membership:

250 GB of total storage

  • 15 GB default storage
  • 50 GB storage from Chromebook, Safer Internet Day, or other promotions*
  • 185 GB storage from Google One membership

* If the promotions end, participation will no longer be available.

What uses your storage space

Not all files use your storage. If you're running low, learn how to clear storage space.

These items take up space

Google Drive

  • Most files in your My Drive. For example:
    • PDFs
    • Images
    • Videos
    • Meet call recordings
  • Items in your Trash. Learn how to empty your trash.
  • As of June 1, 2021, newly created Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, or Jamboard files count toward storage. Files that already exist don't count toward storage unless they're modified on or after June 1, 2021.
Important: For Google Workspace and G Suite editions, this change goes into effect on May 2, 2022.

Gmail

  • Messages and attachments, like items in your Spam and Trash folders.

Google Photos

  • Photos and videos backed up in Original quality.
  • Photos and videos backed up in High quality (now named Storage saver) or Express quality after June 1, 2021. Any photos or videos you backed up in High quality or Express quality before June 1, 2021 will not count toward your Google Account storage. Learn more about Photos backup options.

Remove hidden data from apps in Google Drive

  1. On your computer, go to drive.google.com.
  2. Click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  3. On the left, click Manage apps.

  2. At the bottom, tap Storage and then Free up account storage.
  3. Under “Clean up other items,” tap WhatsApp.

Tip: If you delete your backup, it doesn’t turn off future backups. Learn how to manage your backup settings.

These items don't take up space

Google Drive

  • Files in "Shared with me" and shared drives. These files only take up space in the owner's Google Drive.
  • Google Sites.
  • Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Jamboard, and Drawings files you create before June 1, 2021, and don't edit after that date.

Google Photos

Photos and videos backed up in Storage saver quality or Express quality before June 1, 2021.

Learn what happens if you run out of space
  • Gmail: You can’t send or receive messages. Messages sent to you are returned to the sender.
  • Google Drive:
    • You can’t sync or upload new files.
    • Syncs stop between your computer's Google Drive folder and My Drive.
    • You can’t create new files in:
      • Google Docs
      • Sheets
      • Slides
      • Drawings
      • Forms
