You can control over 50,000 smart home devices like TVs, lights, appliances, plugs, thermostats, sensors, and more when you add them to the Google Home app. To start, set up your device in the Google Home app, then check that they've been synced.

Control devices with the Google Home app

After you set up your device in the Google Home app, you can control it from your phone or tablet.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Favorites or Devices . and then find the tile for your device.
  3. Depending on your device, you can access controls in the following ways:
    • Tap the tile to take a quick action with the device. For example, turn lights on and off or lock and unlock a door.
    • Drag a slider on the tile to gradually adjust. For example, you can dim your lights or change the volume on your speaker or display.
    • For all devices, to access all available controls, touch and hold the tile until the controls open.

On the lock screen of some Android phones, you can quickly pull up smart home controls.

Control and schedule multiple devices with Routines

Create or customize a Routine to control multiple devices at once. Routines can start in these ways:

  • According to a schedule
  • With a voice command
  • With the Google Home app
  • When everyone's away or someone's home

Fix a problem

Check these things first

  • Is your speaker or display plugged into a wall outlet and powered on?
  • Are your speaker or display and other smart devices set up on the same Wi-Fi network?
  • Are you using the same Google Account on your mobile device and in the Google Home app? Are you in the same room as your speaker or display?
    1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
    2. At the top right, tap your account.
    3. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your Google device. If correct, tap to close the account window. To switch accounts, tap the dropdown icon , then tap another account or Add another account

  • Are you in the same room as your speaker or display?

Can't find device in the Google Home app

If you add, update, or change a device in the partner app and can't find the device in the Google Home app, try to sync the smart home control device and your speaker or display.

Sync your devices in the Google Home app

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap your account.
  3. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your Google device. If correct, tap to close the account window. To switch accounts, tap the dropdown icon , then tap another account or Add another account

  4. Resync your linked smart home devices with the Google Home app. You can either:
    • Tap Devices swipe down with your finger on the screen.
    • Tap Settings under "Services", tap Works with Google select the partner tap Reconnect account.
  5. There will be a spinning circle. The sync is complete when the circle disappears.
  6. Tap Devices check for your device.

Sync your devices with your voice

To do this: Say "Hey Google" or "Ok Google," then:
Sync all devices "Sync my devices"
Sync a device type "Sync my lights"

 

Important:

Google Assistant can't control device

To try fixing the issue, rename your device.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Settings .
  3. Under "Devices, groups & rooms", tap your device's tile
  4. Tap Name or Device information Device name.

Tips for renaming your device:

  • Don't include numbers, special characters, or room names.
  • Avoid similar names (for example, "Table light left" and "Table light right").
