Nest camera or doorbell gets hot

Like any electronic device, Nest cameras produce heat while they’re on. It’s normal for your camera or doorbell to get warm to the touch, but it’s designed to quickly disperse heat.

Make sure you’re using your camera in the environment it was designed for.

  • Nest Cam wired, Nest Cam IQ Indoor, Nest Cam Indoor, Dropcam, Nest Cam (wired): 32°F to 104°F (0°C to 40°C)
  • Nest Cam Outdoor, Nest Cam (battery): -4°F to 104°F (-20°C to 40°C)
  • Nest Cam IQ Outdoor: -40°F to 113°F (-40°C to 45°C)
  • Nest Doorbell (battery), Nest Doorbell (wired), Nest Doorbell 2nd gen (wired): -4°F to 104°F (-20°C to 40°C)

Tips to keep your camera or doorbell cool

Extremely hot temperatures can cause your camera or doorbell to reduce its features, lower the video quality, or turn off automatically.

For example, in extreme heat, the Nest Doorbell (battery) might turn off features like Talk & Listen and the live view, and only record on the doorbell press. If it reaches over  104°F (40°C), it will shut down.

Here are some things you can do to help keep your camera or doorbell from getting too hot:

  • Make sure your camera or doorbell is in a well-ventilated space so air can flow around it.
  • Don’t put your camera or doorbell in a case or container, cover it with cloth, molded silicone covers or skins, or any other materials.

If you have an outdoor camera or doorbell, you can install it under an eave or overhang, or even install a small shade above it.
