You can keep your phone number when you switch to Google Fi. Mobile, landline, and Google Voice numbers are welcome.
You start the process when you sign up for Google Fi.

- On your device, activate your Google Fi service.
- Important: Do not cancel your current phone service before you complete the transfer to Fi. For the transfer to work, the number must be active. You can still use your old carrier until your transfer completes.
- In the Google Fi app, follow the on-screen instructions.
- Be ready to give account info from your current carrier.
- Once your transferâs done, you should get a notification on your Google Fi phone.
- Mobile numbers and numbers from Google Voice usually transfer within the first 3 hours.
- Landlines usually transfer within 2 business days.

What you need to know before you start your transfer to Google Fi
How to keep your current phone service activeImportant: Do not cancel your current phone service. For the transfer to go through, your number must be active.
Once your transfer is complete, confirm your plan cancellation with your previous carrier. Many carriers cancel plans automatically after you transfer your number. However, you should still check with the carrier.
While the transfer is underway, you can still use your previous carrier for calls, texts, and data until the transfer completes.
If youâre under contract with your current carrier, check whether there are early termination fees. If so, your carrier might charge you a fee if you leave your contract early. If you have questions, contact your current carrier.
Check if your current carrier charges any fees to transfer your number. If the carrier charges a fee, you can ask them to waive or negotiate those fees.
To make sure transfers are authorized, some carriers have locks on their userâs numbers. To check whether your number is ready for transfer:
- On your device, navigate to your current carrierâs website or app.
- Sign in to your account.
- To make sure the number is unlocked, follow the instructions that your carrier gives you.
If you can't verify whether the number is unlocked, contact your current carrier for assistance.

Why isnât my number eligible for transfer? Your number may not be transferable if:
- Itâs not a US number.
- The area code isnât covered by Google Fiâs primary network partner.
- Thereâs already a transfer pending for the phone number.
- If the pending number transfer is going to Google Fi, contact Google Fi Support.
- If the pending number transfer is going to another carrier, contact that carrier.
- After you cancel the transfer, try to sign up for Google Fi.
- The numberâs already on Google Fi with a different email address.
To switch a number from one email address to another, contact Google Fi Support.
If Iâm on a family plan, can I transfer my number to Google Fi? Yes. However, you should contact your carrier to check whether this action impacts the other people on the family plan.
If I transfer my number to Google Fi and decide to switch carriers, can I take my number with me? Yes, you can cancel your Google Fi service and transfer your number to another carrier.
Can I use my own phone and transfer my number? Yes. Check if your device is compatible with Fi. To start your transfer, download the Google Fi app. Then, follow the instructions to activate your Google Fi service.
You can only use unlocked devices with Google Fi. If you bought your phone through Google Fi or the Google Store, itâs unlocked.
If you arenât sure if your phoneâs unlocked, contact your carrier or the place you bought your phone. Make sure you donât owe any payments on your device. Your carrier might also have other requirements to unlock your device.
You can still use your previous carrier for calls, texts, and data until your transfer completes. You can check the status of your transfer in the Google Fi app at any point.
After you get your Google Fi phone and complete the transfer:
- If you had a single line: Make sure you cancel your plan with your previous carrier.
- If you had a family plan: Make sure your old carrier doesnât charge the account owner of the line you transfer to Google Fi.
- Many carriers cancel your line automatically after you transfer your number. However, you should check with the carrier just in case.

Before you can get texts on your Android phone, you must turn off iMessage on your old iPhone.
Otherwise, text messages might accidentally go to your old iPhone.

If you didnât transfer your number at activation, you can still do so from your Fi account in the Fi app or a web browser:
- On your device, go to your Fi account.
- Sign in to the account that you want to transfer the number to.
- Navigate to your profile.
- Choose the device that you want to transfer the number to.
- To start the transfer process, select Transfer a number to Fi.
- If you can't find "Transfer a number to Fi," contact Google Fi Support.
