How to add Google Fi to tablets

To use your mobile data on tablets and other compatible devices with a data-only SIM, you must sign up for Google Fi and activate your phone.

If you have a Flexible plan or Unlimited Plus plan, use a data-only SIM card. If you have the Simply Unlimited plan, you can’t add a data-only SIM card.

How to add another device

To add a device, first check for compatibility. Then order, activate, and set up data-only SIM on your tablet or other device.

Step 1: How to check compatible devices & SIM cards

Compatible tablets

The tablets that work with Google Fi:

  • Android tablets with 7.0 or up and LTE bands 2 and 4 (US versions)
  • iPads with iOS 14 or up and LTE bands 2 and 4 (US versions)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tabs S2 or up (US version)
  • Nexus 9 LTE (US version)
  • Sony Xperia Z4 (US version)

Some devices need a nano SIM to micro SIM adapter.

Other devices

Data-only SIMs may work with devices that aren’t on the list. To use a data-only SIM, devices must be unlocked and support T-Mobile (GSM radio). You can order a data-only SIM and test it out. However, activation and troubleshooting may not work with unsupported devices.

Tip: If you set up a data-only SIM with a phone, you can access data but you can't make calls and send texts across the mobile network.

Step 2: Find out if you need a SIM card adapter

About SIM adapters

For Google Fi, you should use a nano SIM card. If your device has a different-sized SIM tray, you’ll need a SIM adapter. You can purchase an adapter online or at many electronic retailers.

Find out what SIM card your device uses

To find the SIM card size for your device, go to the manufacturer’s website. If your device uses a micro SIM, you should buy a nano SIM to micro SIM adapter.

Step 3: Order your data-only SIM
  1. Go to your Google Fi account page.
  2. Select Manage Plan and then Add data-only SIM.
  3. Follow the on-screen steps.

Step 4: How to set up your device

Make sure that you have your SIM card and compatible device ready.

  1. Activate your data-only SIM.
    1. Open fi.google.com/data.
    2. Enter the code found on the packaging of your SIM card.
  2. Insert your SIM card.
    • For Google Fi devices: Learn how to insert your SIM.
    • For all other devices: For instructions, check with your device’s manufacturer.

For Android devices

Important: These instructions apply to Nexus tablets with Android 7.0 and up. Steps may vary for your particular device.

  1. On your device, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Network & internet.
  3. Tap Mobile network and then Advanced and then Access Point Names.
  4. At the top of your screen, tap More More and then Name.
  5. Enter Google Fi.
  6. Tap APN.
  7. Enter h2g2.
  8. Go back to the previous page.
  9. From the list, select Google Fi.
  10. If the SIM setup is successful, you can find “Fi Network,” "Google Fi," or "T-Mobile" at the top of your screen.

For iPhone and iPad devices

Important: Steps may vary for your particular device. With Google Fi, you need iOS 14 or up.

  1. On your device, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Cellular and then Cellular Data Network.
  3. For "Cellular Data APN," enter h2g2.

After your SIM setup is successful, you can find "Google Fi" or "T-Mobile” at the top of your device's home screen.

How data-only SIMs work

  • Cost: Cost depends on your Google Fi billing plan. Learn more about Google Fi plans. If you want to find out how much your data-only SIM uses, check your data usage.
  • Tethering: Tethering from a device with a data-only SIM isn’t supported.
  • Coverage: Data-only SIMs provide coverage in 200+ countries and regions. Check our coverage map. You may notice some coverage differences from your main Google Fi phone. Coverage can also vary by device.
  • Number of data-only SIMs: You can add up to 4 data-only SIMs. You can also use the same data-only SIM with multiple devices.
