Turn your TV on and off using speakers or displays

You can turn your TV on and off using your voice and Google Nest or Google Home speaker or display.

What you need

  • Chromecast connected to a Google Nest or Home speaker or display. Learn how to link TVs to speakers and displays.
  • TV that supports HDMI-CEC with Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) turned on.
    • Common TVs that support CEC include: AOC, Hitachi, Insignia, ITT, LG, Magnavox, Mitsubishi, Onkyo, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Sylvania, Toshiba, and Vizio.
    • CEC is often turned off by default. Typically you can turn on CEC in the TVs settings. The location of CEC settings varies depending on the TV.
    • If you're not sure if your TV supports CEC, or how to turn on CEC, consult the TV manufacturer.

Tips:

  • Plug your Google streaming device into a wall outlet or other power source so your device remains on when you turn the TV off. If you plug your streaming device into the USB port on your TV, it will turn off along with your TV and won't respond to your voice commands.
  • If your streaming device is connected to a soundbar or AVR, turn on CEC on that device.
  • Make sure your streaming device is running on the latest firmware. Check streaming device firmware versions for more information and update if necessary.
  • Check if your TV firmware is current.

Turn TV on and off using voice commands

To do this: Say this: "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then:
Turn on TV

"Turn on, the or my TV," "Turn on, the or my <device name>"

"Power on, the, or my TV," "Power on, the or my <device name>"

Turn off TV

"Turn off, the or my TV," "Turn off, the or my <device name>"

"Power off, the or my TV," "Power off, the or my <device name>"

Note: When you turn off a TV, content will stop casting to that TV. If you're playing content on other sources, that content will remain playing.

Tips and tricks to turn your TV on and off

  • If you've linked more than one TV to your speaker or display, you'll need to include the TV you're controlling in every voice command. Example: "Hey Google, turn on <Living room TV>."
  • To avoid saying the TV name each time, you can set your media playback device and your commands will always control that device.

Fix a problem

If voice commands aren’t working, especially if they've worked before, try the steps below:
  1. Make sure that your Chromecast and Google TV Streamer firmware version is updated.
  2. Make sure your TV's firmware is updated by checking the TV user manual. You may also contact your TV manufacturer to verify.
  3. Make sure CEC is turned on (for some TVs, adjusting certain settings can turn off CEC automatically).
  4. Switch the streaming device to a different HDMI port.
  5. Unplug the TV, wait 10 minutes, and plug it back in.
  6. Use a different voice command.
  7. If you’ve turned the TV on or off repeatedly during a short period of time, the voice commands may briefly stop working. Wait about 10 minutes before trying again.
