Masked gunmen steal 84,000 pounds in South Darfur
July 24, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – Masked robbers on Thursday broke into the hospital of Ed el-Firsan county in South Darfur and made off with around 84, 000 Sudanese pounds (SDG), representing the July salaries of the hospital staff.
South Darfur used to be the scene of criminal activities carried out by armed men. In order to curb violence and control the situation, state governor Adam Mahmoud Jar al-Nabi, recently declared an indefinite emergency situation in the state, including a curfew from 7pm to 7am in Nyala.
An administrative officer in the areas, who preferred to speak under the cover of anonymity, told Sudan Tribune on Thursday that the gunmen stole 83,867 pounds, representing the salaries for July.
He added that the money was just arrived from Nyala and was delivered to the accountant, adding that the police arrested him, two aides in his office and two caretakers working in the hospital
On 6 July, unknown armed men ambushed the commissioner of Katila county who was returning to his area and killed him on the spot.
The assailants, according to the police robbed the salaries of Katila municipality employees.
REBELS ATTACK IN NORTH DARFUR
Splinter rebels in North Darfur state attacked government forces in North Darfur’s Kornoy area and robbed belongings of traders and civilians there, according to a former rebel group.
The attackers are led by Abdallah Jini and Dein Musa, two rebel commanders who broke away from the Justice and Equality Movement-Dabajo (JEM-Dabajo). The latter is a former rebel group that signed a peace agreement with the Sudanese government in April 2013.
JEM-Dabajo secretary for presidential affairs, Nahar Osman Nahar, told Sudan Tribune that his movement condemns “in the strongest terms” the attack, saying the robbers meant to loot people’s property.
The spokesperson of the former rebel group, al-Sadiq Zakaria, said the rebels attacked Kornoy market with 7 vehicles.
He added that Dabajo group fighters were based far from the area, asserting they would not turn a blind eye to the attack because they targeted civilian area.
However, he said the rebels killed two soldiers and injured a civilian.
Nahar on the other side said this group participated in the attack on Alquba area north of Kutum. where the Sudanese army killed Ali Karbino by the end of June.
He said they splinted from the JEM-Dabajo as result of the slow implementation of the security arrangements .
