"…there's something I've always found interesting about this model of interrogation droid. It typically isn't programmed to know anything about a prisoner. All it knows is that you're the one in the cell—and that means you must be the interview subject. I've had prisoners break when no one's there to listen. They think they're talking to the droid, but it doesn't hear them. You can tell it anything and it doesn't care. It'll just keep working on you until someone tells it to stop."
Captain Khione[12]

The IT-O Interrogation Unit was an interrogator droid developed by the Imperial Department of Military Research and utilized by the Galactic Empire.

History[]

The IT-O droid was used by the Imperial regime.

Developed in secret by the Imperial Department of Military Research,[1] IT-Os were used by the Galactic Empire to extract information from prisoners through the use of mind probes.[2] Jedi, however, were known to have been trained to resist mind probes, requiring the use of other methods to procure information from them.[6] An IT-O was attempted to be used on Avi Singh by Captain Bragg, although the Separatist senator was liberated before he could be subjected to it.[14] Another was employed by Royce Hemlock to torture CT-9904 "Crosshair" in an attempt to locate his former companions Clone Force 99.[15] One IT-O droid was used to interrogate Kanan Jarrus aboard Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin's Star Destroyer Sovereign. However, torture was eventually handed over to The Grand Inquisitor.[6] Another IT-O was used by Governor Arihnda Pryce to interrogate the rebel Hera Syndulla after the failed attack on the Imperial fuel depot for the TIE/D Defender Elite project.[16]

An IT-O was later used aboard the Death Star to extract information from Princess Leia Organa, although she proved to have considerable resistance to the mind probe.[2] The IT-O was later deployed on Yavin 4 during the Empire's cleanup operations at the former Alliance base.[13]

By 9 ABY, at least one as lab droid reprogrammed white-painted IT-O was active on the planet of Plazir-15. The IT-O unit worked alongside a lab tech in a morgue, where they received a rogue B2-series super battle droid. The IT-O unit however, attacked its master when it was infected with nanodroids planted by Commissioner Helgait. The droid was destroyed by Din Djarin with the Darksaber before it could deal any major damage.[4]

Decades later, the First Order used a new model of interrogator droid that harked back to the IT-O model.[17]

Characteristics[]

IT-O Interrogation Unit

IT-O units were commonly used by the Galactic Empire.

The IT-0 was designed around a small spherical repulsor-equipped casing. Around this casing there were a multitude of devices, based on standard medical droid equipment, but modified to cause pain and biological degradation to subjects instead of curing them. These devices included a sonic torture device, an electroshock nerve probe on top of the droid's frame as well as a drug injector syringe, prominently mounted on the droid's side and designed to be as large -and therefore intimidating- as possible. Other equipment included a chemical torture turret, deployable flesh peelers and joint cripplers, a mind probe, and a truth serum.[18]

The droid was non-sentient and designed only to continuously inflict torture upon its subjects until instructed to stop doing so. Although it was equipped with a red victim analysis photoreceptor and assorted biofeedback monitors which allowed it to accurately determine whether the victim was telling the truth or not, it could not actually act on this information and would merely relay it to a superior officer.[19]
