On Wednesday, Romanian gymnastics star Ana Barbosu announced her commitment to Stanford.

“Can’t wait to join this amazing family! Go Card,” said Barbosu in an Instagram post, which announces she will join the program in the fall.

The 18-year-old Olympian has already made a significant mark on the international stage. She dominated the 2020 European Junior Championships, earning six gold medals in all-around, team, vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Barbosu became the first artistic gymnast to win all six golds at a Junior European championships.

Since transitioning to senior competition, Barbosu has continued to excel. The gymnast has competed in multiple international meets, including the World Championships, where she consistently ranks among the top contenders.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she earned a bronze medal in the floor exercise. Her podium finish came after a controversial medal reallocation process involving American gymnast Jordan Chiles, following scoring irregularities in Chiles’ routine. Although Barbosu was ultimately awarded the bronze, legal challenges regarding the decision remain ongoing.

Stanford’s gymnastics program, led by head coach Tabitha Yim, is coming off a strong 2024 season that included a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. The team also earned top-three finishes at the Pac-12 Championships and NCAA Los Angeles Regional, signaling a resurgence for the program.

Barbosu’s commitment to the Farm sets the stage for history as she will become the first Olympic medalist from Romania to compete in NCAA gymnastics.
