John Cratchley I wanted to explore more of the Rocket Records catalogue and settled on S&S... A lot of label hype here,not all of it justified,for me.
There's a lot of hybridisation going on here...some of which could make viable cultivars and some that just won't grow into healthy specimens in the long run.
I take issue with "necro-Neck grooves"...er,no; Lloyd and Tony don't construct in this way at all,I think (at least not from conversations i've had with them or from the numerous gigs i've seen),necrotic or not...
There isn't that level of evolving pattern here (if only)...there are some very nice,solid grooves and interesting off-kilter glitches (although they can get a bit Pixar Sound Effect for me at times)but it isn't "reckless audio endangerment" (try Zu's 'Carboniferous' for a good example of that)...
So,let's not get beyond ourselves here...some very good music but not a "unique niche" yet,I feel...but then any band worth their salt don't buy into the label hype (do they?) or care at all about what I think (and rightly so)...in the final analysis,make up your own mind.

Favorite track: Writing Poetry On Your Forehead With The Tip Of a Hunting Knife.

Gavin Hellyer This is a seriously good fuckin' record and without doubt their best release yet in my opinion. Get it, if you dare!!! coz if you don't you'll regret it. I mean ,"Electric Pony 2" sounds and feels like we are being invaded by robots from outer space and they are shooting us in the stomach with bass machine guns and making us do a motorik trance dance. Fuck this is visceral music and quiet overwhelming. Wow. Favorite track: Electric Pony 2.

Shit and Shine, the mutant brainchild of seasoned transgressor Craig Clouse, have traversed to places that few ordinary bands would dare to venture, and moreover have transcended both genre and sanity in their pursuit of reckless audial endangerment. Taking the repetitive rhythmic drive of krautrock and marrying it to a percussive Butthole Surfers-style strain of acidic intensity. theyâ€™ve carved out a unique niche for themselves as one of the most unpredictable, ornery and - occasionally - outright unpleasant outfits in living memory.

Like a robot Can-Hawkwind hybrid in a Phillip K. Dick future, reassembling disco, abstract electronica and noise rock into elegant new shapes, Shit and Shine furrow brows and fry synapses in equal measure. In spite of this new opus boasting a leaner, sleeker attack than that of yore â€“ partly informed by the bandâ€™s recent releases on Powellâ€™s Diagonal records - the same sense of gleeful perversity is abundant, and the same twisted humour ingrained in these grotesque and hypnotic grooves.

Where there is rock within â€˜54-Synth-Brass 38 Metal Guitar 65 Cathedralâ€™, its essence is morphed and feverishly formulated into extraterrestrial aural landscapes, as on the opening â€˜Electric Pony 2â€™, which lurches forth like Chrome alchemically reassembling the disembodied spirit of Marc Bolan in a scrapyard trash compactor. Elsewhere, spectres of smooth jazz fusion lock horns with the against-the-grain approach of Aphex Twin, circular necro-Necks grooves are beset by demons. and the abstract funk of â€˜Love Your Hair-Hope You Winâ€™ locks a Larry Graham-style groove in a vortex of digital disorientation.

Brandishing an intimidating psychic attack and equipped as ever with both nameless menace and savage wit, rarely has a band made sounding so wrong sound so right.
