Mohamed Mahmoud El-Shazly is the Head of Pharmaceutical Biology Department, Faculty of Pharmacy and Biotechnology, the German University in Cairo, Cairo, Egypt. He was graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Ain-Shams University, Cairo, Egypt, with a general grade excellent with honor in 2000. Following graduation, he pursued his postgraduate studies as a teaching and research assistant at the Department of Pharmacognosy at the same institute. After obtaining his postgraduate diploma, he traveled to Germany (Jacobs University Bremen, Bremen, Germany) to pursue his master's and Ph.D. studies. In 2006, he received his master’s degree in nanomolecular science, and he was offered a position at the same institute to complete his Ph.D. focusing on the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates and natural products. In 2009, he received his Ph.D. and went back to Egypt to join his home institute as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Ain-Shams University. In 2011, he received an offer to work at the Graduate Institute of Natural Products, Kaohsiung Medical University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He spent there 2.5 years working as a postdoctoral fellow researching in different fields including natural product isolation, structural elucidation, and determination of their biological activity. This postdoctoral experience assisted him to polish his knowledge and experience through guiding master and Ph.D. students in their research. In 2015, he was promoted to associate professor at the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Ain-Shams University. In 2017, he joined the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biotechnology, the German University in Cairo.

This study aimed at probing the mechanism of the combined extracts, namely, GA (3 g/kg/day), parsley (1 g/kg/day), and corn silk (200 mg/kg/day), as nephroprotective agents in mice after amikacin (1.2 g/kg) single dose through exploration of their action on G-protein coupled receptors (GPR) 41 and 43 and the ensuing lysosomal biogenesis. Western blotting was employed for renal levels of bcl-2-associated X protein (BAX) and cytosolic cathepsin D; cell death markers, nuclear transcription factor EB (TFEB), and lysosomal associated membrane protein-1 (LAMP-1); and lysosomal biogenesis indicators. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and docking were also employed. After amikacin treatment, BAX and cathepsin D levels were upregulated while LAMP-1 and nuclear TFEB levels were inhibited.
