The current toun grew frae aroond the year 1000 frae a castle an, in 1351, it hoosit the inhabitants o the destroyed Paterno. It wis a fief o the Monaldeschi della Cervara an o the Savelli faimilies. Sauld tae the Hoose o Farnese in 1539, it wis pairt o the Duchy o Castro till 1637, when the ceetizens bocht back their freedom for 20,000 ducats.
It remained pairt o the Papal States till 1870, when it wis annexed tae the newly unifee'd Kinrick o Italy.
