Ranma's Calligraphy Challenge (乱馬はヘタクソ?格闘書道, Ranma wa Hetakuso? Kakutō Shodō?) is the is the 97th episode of Ranma ½ Nettohen, and the 115th episode of the 1989 Ranma ½ anime overall.
Summary[]
Insulted when a travelling master of Martial Arts Calligraphy declares him too unskilled to fight, Ranma determines to face him in battle.
Plot Overview[]
Sotatsu Jikei'ien defeats a martial artist at calligraphy. On his way to his dojo, he met a cat, who hissed and spat accidentally. Sotatsu laughed at that matter. At his dojo, he practiced his calligraphy. He said, "I will conquer all of Japan", and started laughing hysterically. As he regains his composure, he inspects himself on the mirror, saying perfection.
Sotatsu met Akane Tendo, Ranma Saotome, and Tatewaki Kuno. He read Tatewaki's letter about his love for Akane. Kuno got furious and grabbed the letter from Sotatsu. Sotatsu fought Kuno and Sotatsu beat him!

Trivia[]
- During the fight, Shampoo shouts "Darling, ganbatte!" in a way very close to Urusei Yatsura's Lum. It is reasonable, considering that Shampoo is in fact Rumiko Takahashi's attempt to re-do original Urusei Yatsura story.
- If one goes by Kuno's judgement, the "fight" between Ranma and Sotatsu ends in a draw. This is probably the only "genuine" draw in the entirety of the manga or anime (whenever Ranma loses once, he always pays back with victory later on). This is not the case here.
- Sotatsu's family name, Jikei'ien, is not said in the dub.
- When Ranma is trying to write a challenge letter to Sotatsu, music from Maison Ikkoku can be heard.
