Could use some advice, please
[edit]Hi Jethro,
I really appreciate you reading this and any advice you have time to give. I had made some edits to a page "Hilary Rowland" that subsequently got it deleted, and I'm trying to fix that. Can you please check my draft and tell me what needs to be changed? I've added a lot of references from top newspapers, and edited as much as I know how to. Thank you for the advice! Here's the draft: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Hilary_Rowland
Hi Jethro, I received your invite to the teahouse and wanted to say thank you and hello! Also, I submitted a page "Alston Ramsay" that has not been reviewed. I was curious if you knew any way or were able to speed up the review process, since I would love to get it up sooner. If you have any suggestions, they would be very appreciated! Here is the draft: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Alston_Ramsay
Thank you very much for you help! I really appreciate it. Best wishes, Jenny

Hello! Advice on understanding Wiki
[edit]Hi, I am here to ask from advice from an experienced editor like yourself. The reason I am here on wikipedia is due to a university project focused on understanding the heart of wikipedia, one I am not clear on but understand it is sentered on informing people around the world and the volunteer effort to make sure said knowledge is true. is there a way I can communicate with the many people in wikipedia and conversate about their own efforts and motivations. Thank you JethroBT, really appreciate your help.
- @Reciprocal learning yute: Hi there-- this is my staff account for my work in Community Resources. If you have further questions around editing or the volunteer community who develops and maintains the content on Wikipedia projects, please contact me on my volunteer account: User:I JethroBT. The scope of your project is quite large, and I think it will be important to understand what language Wikipedia projects you'd like to work on. Response from UncleBash007
[edit]Hi Jethro Thank you for the comments ad recommendations, i will make use of the pageviews tool during the project. .I will briefly introduce new users on missions and visions of wikipedia, I will then focus on training them on how to make edits, add references and photos to improve articles. .Hence, after training,I want the new users to be able to navigate and make necessary contributions to Wikipedia, and if possible get active users among them by engaging them in an editathon [[1]] .As most of the new users will be students, i will provide them with transport from their respective institutions to the training venue. I will also provide internet access such as data subscriptions and computers (rentals). There will also be certificates of participation to all volunteers Uncle Bash007 (talk) 23:21, 19 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Uncle Bash007: Thanks for these clarifications, Bashir. I'll be adding these comments to the talk page of your grant proposal so our discussion is easy to follow. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 03:54, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello, it seems to me that this category is redundant to its parent, Category:Conference & Event Grants, considering that both appear to be relating to Grants:Conference. If so, I suggest redirecting it there to avoid confusion. ~~~~
User:1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 17:46, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
- @1234qwer1234qwer4: Agreed, thanks for noting this. It is indeed redundant. I'll redirect it to Conference & Event Grants category, which the official name of the funding program. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 17:53, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Looking at the other subcategories of Category:Wikimania 2021/Scholarship applications, it seems that the latter format would be preferred. ~~~~

Rapid grants numbers
[edit]Hi, I've updated a couple of pages (e.g. Grants:Project/Rapid/Learn) based on your recent edit to Grants:Project/Rapid, aiming to avoid confusion with conflicting numbers on different pages. I hope that's appropriate and I've not misunderstood anything, so please revert if I've missed the mark. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 01:37, 18 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Evolution and evolvability: Thanks, these changes are helpful, and I think they will help reduce confusion for the time being. We'll eventually be moving to deprecating these pages in the next several months though since they will refer to a program we no longer maintain and also because the long list of funding guidelines no longer applies. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 02:15, 18 November 2021 (UTC)
- For clarity, we'll be directing folks to the Rapid Fund program once the new application process is ready for that program. For several reasons, our funding criteria are much more flexible than before, and we are generally able to support a broader set of expenses. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 02:18, 18 November 2021 (UTC)
Use case
[edit]Hello I JethroBT. I though it may be interesting for you to briefly check how I bring back your Grant calls:
- Summary Template:Grants_table brings selected information from your Grants pages to my community in order to raise awareness locally and sparkles grant requests.
- Lingualibre:Roles & Lingualibre:Workshops/Events (stub) our young wiki community attempts to define roles and possibles avenues of actions. So volunteer quickly "click" with a role and a clear path to action.
I see those 3 pages as a complementary group to ease the path and call for action beyond local edits. Potentially funded by WMF grants, if informed folks then follow the lead and come to you. Yug (talk) 21:02, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Yug: Thanks for sharing these with me, this is a really nice overview and I think the way it is presented along side these uses cases is very useful. I'd like to bring these resources to the attention of the rest of our team as well. A few corrections for clarity:
- lingualibre:Template:Grants_table
- Range budgets should always be in USD for accuracy-- I see some of these are listed in EUR or just $ which can be ambiguous.
- WMF Grants:Project > R&D - The Research aspect of this funding program is open, but the Technology part is not.
- Rapid grant (2022) should be Rapid Fund (2022), as we are deliberately moving away from using the terms grant or grants to describe these programs. (The main rationale is because it does not translate well to many language communities we work in.)
- General Support Fund range budget is listed as 10K - 300K USD -- this is an average range, but does not denote a hard limit, and there is no defined limit on this funding program at this time. We will definitely be funding some organizations more than 300K USD through this program.
- Thanks again for your work here, and I hope we will receive some more LinguaLibre-related proposals soon! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 03:28, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- Thank for this review, I took note !
- Changed € ⇒ EUR and $ ⇒ USD, etc. The EUR row is the Wikimedia France's Rapid fund program, values are in EUR. LinguaLibre is still very much driven by WMFR and French contributors. We are pushing to move away from that centralized legacy and increase community resilience.
- Other changes: done.
- Following our discussion, the 3 former Grants rows will be removed soon.
- This table is a work in progress, preparing future LL campaigns yes (2022!). Yug (talk) 08:14, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- Thank for this review, I took note !

LinguaLibre Campaign
[edit]Hello I JethroBT,
On LinguaLibre we are starting to design a broad 6 months long PR effort campaign. I wonder if such overall PR campaign based on mailing to popular languages and tech blogs/newsrooms, creation of base PR materials followed by translations, and writing of ~8 needed downstream grant requests could itself be funded by some 50k$ Grant fund ?
More that for an answer, i am coming to your talkpage for guidance. Where should I discuss or submit such overall transversal campaign ? I will move this discussion there. Yug (talk) 00:16, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Yug: Thanks for sharing these ideas with me to support LinguaLibre. Because this is a complex set of related but separate proposals, my suggestion for next steps would be to have the applying individuals or organizations who are proposing these projects to contact the Regional Program officer over e-mail depending on where they are physically based. You can find more information about each funding region here, and a listing of our team is provided here. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 15:03, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- Received, thank you Jethro for orienting me. I will look into this avenue. I also moved the content above elsewhere to decluster your talkpage and plan calmly. Yug (talk) 10:00, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
- As a follow up anecdote, the volunteer-based LL PR campaign designed and lead by Marreromarco, which my overall PR+tech funding requests plan aimed to secure and solidify, has just been called off. Marreromarco has assessed the software side to be too basic to satisfy non-wikimedian public, and therefore, not worth his ambitious volunteer-powered PR campaign. In our case, tech and PR goes together. I'm still drafting a draft proposal for Marti. Yug (talk) 11:48, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

Campaigns Product Update #3
[edit]Hello Campaigns Product Newsletter subscribers!
We are excited to share our updates:
- Proposal to create new namespaces: We have proposed to create two namespaces, which are “Event” and “Event talk.” This way, we can easily create an Event Center that pulls data from event pages. This Event Center may include tools to create event pages with registration support, a calendar of events, and event statistics, among other features. More importantly, the Event Center will highlight organizing as an essential part of the Wikimedia movement. Please give us feedback on Phabricator or Meta about our proposal to create two new namespaces.
- Engineering updates: We are excited that we have finished hiring for our engineering team! Three engineers and an engineering manager have joined our team since our last update. In the last few months, they have conducted technical planning and launched the building phase of the project. They are now building the registration tool. You can see the updated team on meta.
- Design updates: We conducted usability tests with a small group of testers for early feedback on the desktop wireframes. After collecting this feedback, we have developed a new version for desktop wireframes, which will be ready to share in the next few weeks. These desktop wireframes display the user flow of two experiences: one for organizers who want to add registration to their event pages, and another for participants who want to register for an event. Additionally, the design team is also currently working on the first version of mobile wireframes, which will be shared during the next office hour.
- 1. View the latest desktop wireframes in Figma for Campaign Organizer Prototype and Participant Registration Prototype.
- 2. Leave us some feedback on the desktop wireframes. Note that we haven’t posted the newest version of the desktop wireframes on the project page yet, but we will soon (and you can feel free to add feedback on any version you have seen).
- Ambassador updates: Three product ambassadors for the Arabic, French and Swahili communities have now joined our team! They will help us collect feedback from Wikimedia communities about the project and understand the needs of organizers, through gathering first-hand information. These ambassadors are immersed as actual members of these communities, so they will also help us identify the needs of the organizers in our pilot communities. The ambassadors are: M. Bachounda for Arabic communities, Georges Fodouop for French communities, and Antoni Mtavangu for Swahili communities.
What is next?
- Next Office Hour: We will be holding an office hour on March 31, 2022 at 15:00 UTC, which will be conducted via Zoom. We invite everyone to attend, and we really hope to see you! The focus will be on the Registration Tool. The team will also be providing community updates on the usability test findings and design highlights for the wireframes. We will also share our current Project timeline and answer any questions you may have. Join us and share your thoughts on these developments!
- In a few months, we are expecting to have the early testable version of the tool. By then, the team will be doing the first round of general testing and gathering feedback. We are looking forward to adding more features on the tool such as communication support, potentially by the end of this year. If you know other organizers that might be interested in following these developments, please recommend that they subscribe to the newsletter. We want to receive as much feedback as we can.
Thank you!

- Enable registration on your event page (as an event organizer)
- Collect data on who registered for your event (as an event organizer)
- Register for an event on the event page (as an event participant)
You can attend one office hour or both, depending on your availability on the following dates:

Application navbox (translation)
[edit]Hello, thank you putting through a application navbox for translation. Would you help me see how the first language be added in case of pages where I am the first to add translation?
I am aware how I can cheat, for ex if fr is already given on the language box at the page top, click through > fr > language toggle button > pick ja. But when I am honored the first rounder, how can I add ja and start working on? Any links to initiate myself is very appreciated. Cheers, -- Omotecho (talk) 01:35, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Omotecho: Thanks for your translation support in to Japanese! There are two ways of doing this.
- Once there are translation tags on the page and the page has been marked for translation by a translation admin, you need to select the "Translate this page" link at the top of the page to start adding translations. After that you'll see a drop down menu of languages in the top right. Select 日本語 from the list, and you'll be able to start translating the page contents into Japanese. Once any content on the page has been translated, it'll add the "ja" language toggle button in the language box.
- You can add languages to languages box if you request to become a translation admin on Meta:Requests for adminship. When marking a page for translation, translation admins can specify any priority languages for translation on a given page, even if those translation haven't been started yet. These languages will appear in the language box at the top of the page. I've added some languages to Template:Wikimedia Foundation Funds/Review applications, including Japanese, as an example.
- Importantly, if a translation admin hasn't marked a page for translation, it can't be translated yet. I recommend requesting to become a translation admin if you like to do translation work on Wikimedia projects! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 15:32, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

There are several outstanding questions and it would be great if you could follow up. Best, Andreas JN466 10:56, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
Campaigns Product Update #4
[edit]Hello Campaigns Product Newsletter subscribers!
We are excited to share our updates:
- Event Registration v0
- We have successfully launched Event Registration tool V0 on beta cluster and collected feedback from the first batch of testers. This tool is part of a more comprehensive organizing solution, the Event Center, which hopes to support movement organizers. Through this registration solution, organizers can collect useful data on campaign participants and their needs while respecting participant privacy.
- Testing update. In our first round of feedback collection, testers were composed of different types of organizers around the movement with a language focus on Arabic, French, English, and Swahili communities. Most of the testers successfully created their test event registrations and signed up for a test event registration created by other organizers. Simple, easy to use, and aids in managing event participants were the common feedback we received from first-time users. In contrast, access and proper localization of the tool were the points for improvement identified. We are working on V1, which will include communication support and integration with the Programs and Event Dashboard. This will be released on Meta-Wiki soon. We hope to address accessibility during this launch and improve localization problems once the tool has been deployed in local wikiprojects.
- The tool is still available for testing on the beta cluster. Feel free to leave feedback on our project talk page or this form.
- Organizer LabLooking for a way to learn how to effectively organize around sustainability? Join the beta version of the Organizer Lab on WikiLearn to understand how to effectively organize a global campaign around sustainability and climate change! Applications are open from September 22 - October 19, 2022. The Organizer Lab will be a 9-week online learning experience from the end of October until mid December that prepares participants to obtain knowledge about the topics that they wish to create, a call to action for strategic knowledge gaps, as well as more generalized Wikimedia organizing and campaign/event design skills.
What's Next:
- Organizer Lab Information Session. We invite you to join our information session for the Organizer Lab on September 30, 2022 at 14:00 UTC via Zoom. Join this session!
- Organizer User Rights. We are reaching out to a pool of administrators from Arabic, French and Swahili communities to collect feedback on what is the best way to define organizer user rights, what privileges to give to community organizers, and what are the limitations of these privileges. Feel free to reach out to our product ambassadors or send an email to [email protected] if you are interested to be part of these conversations.
Community Feedback:
- French Organizer
“I think that the platform will facilitate the process of promoting events and searching for participants”
- Arabic Organizer
Thank you!

Sunday November 13 Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network meeting
[edit]The Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network (SWAN) is a developing forum for all Wikimedia movement affiliates to share ideas on the Wikimedia 2030 strategy process. It expands on the model of the All-Affiliates Brand Meeting to help lay some of the groundwork for a future Global Council.
We'll focus on strategic and outreach topics of mutual concern to all affiliates including Wikimedia Research Fund, 2023 Ombuds commission and Case Review Committee appointments process, feedback on consultation and community session of the Movement Charter Drafting Committee, various Wikimania topics: (ideas/suggestions for Wikimania 2023, expressions of interest for Wikimania 2024 and beyond, expressions of interest to join Wikimania Steering Committee), and other ongoing activities.
This month we are meeting on Sunday November 13, and you are all invited to RSVP here.

Help organizing edit-a-thons in Kansas City
[edit]Ziski Putz suggested I contact you. I want to organize a Wikidata edit-a-thons in the Kansas City (KC) metro area to make it easy to create and maintain local directories of different things. I'm involved with two different groups that want to do things, for which I think this is part of a in ideal solution for directories of (a) local news sources and (b) organizations in the greater KC metro area concerned with peace, justice, environment, and human rights.
Secondarily, I'm currently the primary content producer for "Radio Active Magazine", a half-hour weekly show on a local affiliate of the Pacifica radio network of Wikipedia:community radio stations.
I've done the following with zero responses so far:
- Posted a general request to Wikidata:Wikidata:Requests for comment/Creating directories using Wikidata for help with the technical details of using Wikidata for something like this, and
- Posted a request for local collaborators to the talk page (link above) associated with a Wikipedia article on Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Meetup/Kansas City. It links to a list of 352 users, only 5 of which have been added since 2012
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, DavidMCEddy (talk) 14:55, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
- @DavidMCEddy: Hi David, thanks for reaching out regarding your proposal to support edit-a-thons in KC. Would you be interested in having a brief meeting with me next week to discuss your proposal and possible opportunities we have to support it? We can also discuss some approaches to community engagement to support your second idea. If so, you can check out my calendar here under the Office Hours section and sign up for a time to meet with me. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 15:36, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks. I signed up for next Monday, 11 AM in your calendar. Is that your time (Eastern?), mine (Central), Zulu, or something else? Any will work for me, but I'd like to know ;-) DavidMCEddy (talk) 23:20, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
- @DavidMCEddy: Ah sorry. This is one of the unfortunate limitations of Google Calendar scheduling. I'm also in
Central Daylight Time (CDT)CST, so it will be 11:00 AM for us both :) I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 05:36, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

- @I JethroBT (WMF): Minor quibble: Central time -- which is now CST not CDT ;-)
- My proposed agenda:
- How to organize and run an edit-a-thon.
- What is needed in Wikdata to make this all work.
- FYI: I've invited one other collaborator to the meeting. We will meet with others Sunday, and I plan to invite them, also. The meeting Monday will probably be only you and me, but if others are available and want to attend, I plan to invite them -- with the caveat that we may not be able to answer all their questions in that meeting, and you can give us the circumstances under which you would be available for a follow-on meeting.
- Thanks again, DavidMCEddy (talk) 05:59, 19 November 2022 (UTC)
- @DavidMCEddy: Sounds good! And thanks for the correction. The sooner we can be rid of time changes, the better IMO. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 06:04, 19 November 2022 (UTC)
- @I JethroBT (WMF): another trivial quibble: We might even get rid of time zones if the entire world becomes substantially more mobile than the US is today. However, I don't expect to see that in this life ;-)
- I use Google calendar. I think it has a feature that allows a user to label the display in two different time zones. I remember having used something like that in the past.
- Might there be people within the WMF you can ask about how your calendar appears to people in other time zones and how it could be labeled so it was clear? It's clearly theoretically possible, but I don't know if that's something a user can set with Google's current code. DavidMCEddy (talk) 06:16, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

Hey Chris! I have a request for help and guidance on my application that I would like to submit to the Wikimedia Foundation. I represent the Open Foundation. We have been cooperating with the Polish chapter Wikimedia Polska Association for many years, creating audio projects. Since 2005, I have been dealing with podcasts, and since 2010, I have been running the Wikiradio project for 6 years, recording podcasts about Wikimedia. All these podcasts are available in Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:WikiRadioSince 2016, unfortunately, new programs are no longer created, because I can no longer afford to work without pay. A friend told me that I can get funding for a podcast for the Polish community of Wikipedians and Wikimedians from the Wikimedia Foundation. This is how I found your address. I talked to our Polish chapter Wikimedia Polska Association and I would easily receive recommendations and justification for the existence of such a communication channel, i.e. podcasts. In the first year, we would like to record 12 episodes more or less every month. We would also handle the Wikimedia Polska conference, as we used to do (recordings in Commons). I don't know what grant to apply for. For 12 episodes, we should be able to spend PLN 16,000, which is about $ 3,400. Let me know if you can help, I will be very grateful. Of course, I will submit the application in English, but now I don't have contact with a translator, so I write in Polish. I hope that this is not a problem :) Regards Borys Kozielski (talk) 20:21, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

Midterm conversation - Alliances Fund
[edit]Hi I JethroBT (WMF),
I hope you are fine! I'm writing to you today because I have a few questions about the mid-term meeting that is to take place on March 27th.
- What time will this meeting be held (Montreal time)?
- On which platform will we meet?
- Who will participate in this meeting? Will there be other Wikimedia people? On our side, there will be Eva Patenaude, administrative director at Rhizome, as well as myself.
- I was also wondering, in which language will the meeting be held? My spoken English is not up to the mark, it would be much easier for me to speak to you in my mother tongue, French.
- Finally, how is the meeting going? Do we have to prepare ourselves in any way from our side? We submitted the mid-term report as planned, but are there other things to prepare by March 27?
Thanks a lot in advance,
Frédérique Dubé FrederiqueDube (talk) 14:29, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Jethro
[edit]Hi Jethro, I am having an issue with other editors who are removing my additions and revisions about Eastern European cultures. In the latest instance, they removed my edits about poppyseed paste, making the comment that there is no evidence to show that it is used in savory dishes. What?! Poppyseed on pasta and pirohy are not sweet, but the arrogance I have experienced is not acceptable. They blocked my IP addresses, and now I cannot edit for 2 years. Let me make it clear, I live in Central Europe. I am studying ancient Slavic paganism and Ruthenian culture. Additionally, someone has quoted the same unsupported "source" that Slavic gods are all made up from the 19th century. References to these Gods stretch back to Roman times, and is frequently mentioned in church documents about the Chritianization of Czechia and Slovakia.
For one church, the sign for the church talks about the origins of the church on the 5th c. BC as a pagan temple, and my edits (while needing better grammer) have repeatedly been removed, and the comment made that there is no source for it.
I tried repeating the sign exactly and it was still removed! It seems as if there is some compaign by Western Christians to destroy the Ruthenian history associated with these places. Furthermore, many of the villages in Eastern Slovakia were established around the 9th to 12th century and the editors keep changing the date to some German date from the 1500s. This is not acceptable or accurate. The Slovak version has the correct dates and information, albeit Christian biased, but the English version is completely different. Could you fix this? 46.34.233.227 10:11, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Chris, WikiJournal just had a meeting on yesterday. Our admin, User:ecsussman (Ellen), said that she has been trying to reach you for over a month but received no response. Since I recalled the conversation you and I had while waiting for our delayed flight in Indianapolis that you also contacted Ellen but didn't hear back. I was wondering if there's issues with inbound/outbound emails on our end (we use customized email domain on the frontend, but it's actually Gmail on the backend). We want to make sure that we can discuss our next steps before submitting our annual grant proposal in next cycle. Thanks. OhanaUnitedTalk page 14:49, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for this message. I've followed up with Ellen, but just wanted to confirm that I do not have any older messages from her that are outstanding, so it is possible that there is some communication issue. I have reached out earlier today to plan to meet to discuss some of the questions around funding. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 16:40, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
