If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair, but the hairspray and the electric toothbrush. We asked actress Zooey Deschanel — who was recently named as a brand ambassador for Cricut — about the eyeliner, jumpsuit, and fabric face masks she can’t live without.
I always wear liquid eyeliner. I love liquid eyeliner. I like how much precision you can get with it. But liquid eyeliner can be a tough thing to apply, which is why the applicator is so important. The worst thing in the world is when your eyes water a little bit and all of your hard work making a cat eye goes to waste. I actually did a test with a bunch of different liquid liners: I put like five on my hand and then used water to check how much each one smudged. This one just stayed. It’s super long-lasting and I wear it every day.
This is another product I use every single day. I actually have two. I’m a vegetarian, so I try to make lots of beans and rice, and this makes cooking those things so easy. Or I’ll throw in a vegetable, whether it’s asparagus or mushrooms, along with some onion, garlic, and broth, and then purée it all with a little bit of coconut milk. You can sauté in this, you can use it as a slow cooker, you can steam corn in it. It’s so good. I have little kids, so another thing I like is that I can plug this in and safely put it aside. It’s not another pot on the stove — though I do cook on my stove all the time, too.
This acts like a petroleum product, but it’s all-natural. It’s made of beeswax and other oils and stuff. Basically, if you have really dry skin, you can put it on over your moisturizer. You can also use it as a lip balm and with kids, like if your baby has a rash you could use this. You can put it on a little cut or a burn. It is just so multipurpose. I usually have a small tube of it with me all the time.
It was maybe seven years ago when I switched from plastic water bottles. I saw how many were not getting recycled and getting dumped in the ocean, and I decided not to ever use a plastic water bottle, or a disposable one, unless it’s an emergency or I really have to. It’s not that hard. I don’t know why people keep buying disposable plastic water bottles when you can have your own water bottle. The Hydro Flask keeps your water really cold or really hot, if you put hot tea in it or something. And the water bottles look pretty. The one I use has a straw. I love it.
Being on a TV show for seven years, I got spoiled by having my hair done all the time. Even on the weekends — I would get a blow-dry at work and then just make it last until Monday. When my show ended, I cut my hair off because I thought that would help me be able to keep it looking nice on my own. I still had to go get blow-drys, though. This was game-changing for me. It dries my hair in ten minutes. One of the attachments, which is like a brush, works so fast. That extra time is worth it to me. I don’t like to recommend super-expensive products, but I use this three or four times a week and now my hair always looks nice when I do it myself. So it’s an essential to me.
A while back, I was looking for a sunscreen that is mineral-based and I found this company. The founder had skin cancer in her family and then she created a sun-care line. I use this every day as a sunscreen, and often as foundation, too. It’s nontoxic, mineral-based, and really good as both.
I love jumpsuits in general, but I really love the cut of Rachel Antenoff’s jumpsuits. She makes short-sleeve ones and long-sleeve ones so I can wear them in all seasons. I think I have five, including one that has a blue-and-black cow print. They’re all really comfortable and so easy to pull on that you sort of don’t even think about it. And I think the jumpsuits look good on everybody.
I have a bunch of these — there are floral-patterned ones and they also make plain ones. I get compliments on them. They’re also just really comfortable. I wear a mask pretty much all the time — always when I’m out — and have found these to just be comfy to wear for several hours straight. The brand started making masks really early on, and it also promises to donate some for every one purchased.
My skin is really sensitive. I have to be careful not to use too many different things or it will get mad. I like Tatcha because it has a line for sensitive skin, which includes this cleansing oil. I discovered cleansing oil as a product a long time ago — it totally changed my skin-care game. Because of my sensitive skin, I thought it would be bad to use, but the fact that it’s oil means it doesn’t strip me of my skin’s other natural oils.
My supermarket was selling these, so I first tried them there. The drink tastes like soda but has prebiotics and way fewer calories than soda, so it’s like a lesser-evil kind of thing.
If you like soda but don’t drink it anymore, one of these is a nice treat. I like the cola and the strawberry flavors.
It’s amazing how many things you can make with this tiny little tool. The Cricut Joy is so small. I have made a ton of stuff using it, my favorite being T-shirts because it’s so easy and it’s very rewarding — you can make something and then wear it right away. I love making them with my kids because they get to be creative and we have a really good time. It’s a good activity. But you can make cards, home décor — so many different things. The possibilities are basically endless.
