If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hairspray and the electric toothbrush. We asked actress and comedian Sasheer Zamata — whose new film, Spree, is now streaming and in theaters — about the roller skates, moisturizer, and bidet she can’t live without.
I read somewhere that natural girls, when they dry their hair after washing it, shouldn’t use a normal towel, because it splits ends. Maybe that’s the case for all hair? I don’t actually know. I’ve only read up on my hair. But this towel is great because it dries hair so quickly. I also use it on my face. I wash my face multiple times a day, and when I use a regular towel, I feel like I’m dabbing a lot and putting a lot of pressure on my face. But with this, I can just kind of put the microfiber on my face for what seems like a second and then it’s dry.
My best friend, Nicole Byer, likes to find activities and make me do them. She told me to get roller skates, and I was like, “Sure, whatever.” I was already obsessed with this woman named Marawa the Amazing — she has a world record for spinning the most hula hoops on one person, and she roller-skates, too. Marawa designed this pair of rose-gold Impala roller skates, and I was like, “I have to have those.” So I bought them. She also sells hula hoops, so I got one of those. I took it to the park the other day, and it was so fun and people were staring. I’m really trying to find things that make me happy right now because there are so many hours in a day and it’s fun to fill them with exciting new things.
I can’t even remember when I started wearing Tevas, but I feel like it’s been years. My friend Nicole makes fun of me and calls me a hippie witch. Which I am. But I also want to be comfortable. I’m always looking for shoes that have good arch support, and Tevas do. I feel like I can walk forever in them. Plus, you know, you get your toes aired out. I’m a big fan. I’ll wear my Tevas with anything.
I love Glossier in general, and the moisturizer just feels so good. I have oily skin, and I don’t like putting powders on my face or putting on multiple moisturizers and primers just to tame the oil. This is an all-in-one thing. I can moisturize my face while also priming it, so I can just be one and done and out the door. It feels smooth and creamy, but not so creamy that I’m still feeling it hours later. I like it, and I recommend it for sure.
I’ve actually had this for a while, but it’s taken me a long time to install it. The pandemic really prompted that because we couldn’t find toilet paper anywhere. So I was like, “Well, maybe this bidet will help.” And it does. Oh my God. Bidets are game-changers, and I can’t believe we’re not all talking about them all the time. It’s so great, like a mini shower. Because I’m not even showering every day — who am I trying to impress? It’s nice to be able to cleanse yourself fully every time you go to the bathroom, and it saves paper, which is so crucial. Now that I have this new addition to my toilet, I’m seeing how wasteful I was being before. I really hope more people get them. You can adjust the temperature to warmer or colder. You can adjust the pressure so it’s like a light rinse or a full blast. You can even adjust the position so it’s either directly pointed at your butt or more forward to rinse out your lady bits. I think it’s wonderful.
I’m one of those people who’s always cold, so I need to be cocooned at all times. Even though it’s summer, it gets cold at night in L.A. So as I’m settling down to watch something stupid on TV, I just want to wrap myself up. This blanket is so soft; it’s like a comforter, but it’s still light. I don’t know how else to describe it or what it’s made of. But it feels so good on my skin. Like a nice little warm home. I would say if you made an UGG boot into a tube and put it around your body, that’s what this is like.
I’m trying to find ways to be outside more — safely. I’ve been going to the park a lot, but sometimes I’m in the park and there are no trees to be under, because everyone is also dying to be outside. So I always have this tent in my trunk. It’s collapsible and really thin, so I can carry it. You just pop it open and then you’ve got a full-ass umbrella above your head and you can stay out for hours. I can bring it anywhere, and it’s truly just one button to set it up. You don’t need a bunch of cords and poles and things to stick in the ground and make sure it’s upright. It’s like pop and I get to enjoy the outdoors. And that’s awesome.
This jumpsuit is like heaven. It’s basically a bag, and you can tie it around your waist and still have a little silhouette going. I love being able to show people that I have a body, but I’m trying to be comfortable right now. I think that’s very key for this moment in time. It looks like I’m trying, but I’m not. I love that it’s linen, too. That’s slowly what my whole wardrobe is becoming: Anything that’s linen, I’m like, please, please, please put it in my closet. It’s hot, and I need things to breathe. I also bought striped beach chairs that match this and my tent. So I’m going to wear this with the chairs and the tent and just be fully striped out.
Felicia Leatherwood actually did my hair for this movie I was in called The Weekend. She’s like the natural-hair guru and this brush is great. It’s just so easy to use. I don’t feel like I’m attacking myself whenever I’m doing my hair. Also, during this pandemic, I’m not washing my hair as much as I usually do, because again, who am I trying to impress? But I’m not scared that it’s going to be a whole mess because I can just run the brush through there. It really does detangle so easily. I have 4C hair, which is very thick and kinky, and I need something that’s going to be able to move through it. I wish my mom had it when I was younger because she would rip through my hair with a regular comb and I was like biting on a brush, trying to hold in my screams.
