I’m always jealous of anyone I see wearing Cotopaxi on the trail or at the airport. The sustainably minded travel and outdoor brand constructs its clothes from colorful fabrics that are instantly eye-catching, and the designs (responsibly sourced down jackets, clever backpacks that open up like suitcases) are as practical as they are pretty. It guarantees its gear for a lifetime of reasonable use and has a great repair program, as well as a trade-in scheme for used items.
All of this does mean that Cotopaxi’s products are typically rather expensive, which is why the brand’s sale section is worth taking a look at right now. Plenty of past-season stuff is between 30 and 50 percent off, and while it’s mostly winter clothing (that would make a great investment for later in the year), I also found some more summer-ready pieces that you can wear immediately. The best deals are below.
Cotopaxi’s Allpa line of travel bags are some of my absolute favorites for taking on flights. This generously sized fanny pack would be an ideal personal item, perhaps accompanying the larger Allpa carry-on backpack.
Backpack totes are ideal for work, travel, and even carrying diapers. The shoulder straps on this one tuck into a hidden pocket, for a sleeker look.
$40 for duck down is an amazing deal, whatever the garment. And this puffy purple and red scarf is especially cute.
And while we’re on the topic of warm stuff, here’s a packable down jacket with a very high fill-power rating and fun ’70s stripes.
The men’s version is also 50 percent off in this striking blue.
A waterproof windbreaker is ideal for running, hiking, or surviving those freak summer storms that tend to hit New York just as you sit down for a picnic in the park.
This mustard-y men’s version is also on sale, with all sizes currently in stock.
As the Strategist’s resident raincoat expert, I can tell you that it’s extremely difficult to find waterproof jackets that don’t make use of toxic “forever” chemicals. This one is both PFC free and made from recycled fabrics — those are some unusually solid environmental credentials.
Everyone should own a half-zip fleece, and it’s unusual to see one from a big outdoor brand for under $100.
Here’s the matching kids’ style, for a mini-me moment.
I’m a sucker for anything that resembles archival ’90s outdoor gear, and Cotopaxi’s Teca fleece is very vintage-y, complete with snap buttons. It’s available in extended sizing, too.
The men’s version is also half off, in a classic navy.
Hiking pants are rarely this cheap, and these ones have all my favorite features for long days on the trail: adjustable stretchy waistband, zippered pocket, and fabric that’s both water and UV resistant.
And here is the men’s version of those same pants, sadly in a much less fun color.
Or if you’re more of a tights-wearer outdoors (I do not blame you), these ones are odor-resistant and have no fewer than five pockets.
