The first thing to know about sex toys for men is that, yes, they exist. I’ve been covering the sex toy beat for several years now and while more and more men are bringing toys into the bedroom, there can still be some stigma attached. “A lot of people are surprised that there can be products for men,” says Andy Duran, educational outreach coordinator at sex-toy retailer Good Vibrations. People often think vibrators, for instance, are “very gendered and designed for women, but the reality is that our bodies are all pretty similar. We all have nerve endings that respond to vibration, or touch, or stimulation.” Although sexuality is highly personal, I set out to find a variety of sex toys for a variety of preferences. To find the best sex toys for men, I talked to 18 different people, including sex-shop owners and employees, sex educators, sex therapists, sex coaches, and sex podcasters.

What we’re looking for
Type
Since the experts say you’ll want a different type of toy depending on the type of pleasure and play you seek, we’ve noted the type of toy from rings to strokers to prostate toys to anal toys.
Material
You want to make sure you’re investing in toys that are made of high-quality, body-safe materials. Body-safe materials — which include things like silicone, glass, metals like stainless steel, and ABS plastic — are nonporous, so they are less likely to harbor harmful bacteria or viruses and are therefore more hygienic. A few strokers on this list are made from Thermoplastic Elastomer, a soft plastic that is often porous. As such, they should not be shared between partners and should be disposed of by the manufacturer’s set number of uses.
Vibrating versus non-vibrating
While some people love vibration, others may find it to be too intense (especially on more sensitive areas) so we’ve included a good mix of both below within each type of toy.
Best sex toy for men overall
Type: Ring | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
If you’re thinking you want to try out a toy but don’t know exactly where to start, a “ring” toy would be a great choice, since they’re like two toys in one. While the wearer gets the benefits of blood-flow restriction, your partner will feel that vibration on their body during intercourse, adding that even if you end up not liking a vibrating ring, you still can use the toy as a vibrator or ring separately. Zachary Zane, a sex writer for Men’s Health, says that, in his opinion, the vibrations add a lot to the overall experience, especially when you’re with a partner. As he puts it, “No matter how good you are at sex with your partner, you can’t vibrate.”
This cock ring from Je Joue is the best in its class for both comfort and power. The Mio is a favorite in the category because of the powerful motor, streamlined design, and the rumbly, deep, vibrations it creates. Sid Azmi, a sexual therapist and the owner of Please in Brooklyn, agrees, noting that the type of vibration is critical when it comes to higher-tech rings like this one. While some products have a loud rumble, others have a tight rumble that produce more of a ‘buzzing’ sensation. For a cock ring, a tight rumble is crucial, since loud vibrations can cause pain in a lot of males due to its location near the ballsack, which tends to be more sensitive. The ring is also made of a durable silicone and is still quite stretchy so it can fit on a variety of sizes. Another point echoed by Azmi: “Some cock rings are so tiny and tight, it’s like wrapping a thin piece of rubber around your finger. The Mio is superior to the competition from that perspective.” Billy Procida, the host of The Manwhore Podcast, adds that while it isn’t cheap, the Mio is a quality ring that will last for years. In fact, he says that buying cheaper sex toys will cost you more in the long run, because you’ll “be back where you started in three months. Respect your genitals.”
Best less expensive ring
Type: Ring | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
For a simpler, more affordable vibrating ring, try this option from Screaming O. Simply stretch it around the base of your erect penis, and switch it on. Compared to out top pick, it certainly has less bells and whistles (plus it’s only designed for onetime use), but Duran says it’s an effective, discreet, and travel-friendly option for first-timers.
Best app-compatible ring
Type: Ring | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
For long-distance couples, the We-Vibe Pivot is a great choice, because you can control the vibration both on the actual toy and using the included smartphone app. This allows partners to control it from anywhere in the world–or across the dinner table – and create custom vibration patterns. And because it just looks like you’re on your phone, it’s even more discreet. Samantha Bard, co-owner of the Williamsburg sex shop and event space Shag, calls it “the Cadillac of cock rings.”
Best adjustable ring
Type: Ring | Material: Polymer | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Non-vibrating
This stretchy ring is less of a toy and more of a practical solution when you or your partner’s size is causing pain. The toy is actually a collection of very soft, flexible rings that you can add or remove depending on your size. Dr. Steven Snyder, a New York City–based sex therapist and author, says its the “really hot thing” among his patients.“They give a different sensation for penetration and are excellent if a man is going in too deeply.” A note on material: while the original Ohnut was designed in silicone, that made it incompatible with silicone lubrication, so they switched to a polymer. While the brand asserts that Ohnut’s polymer is body-safe because it is not permeable with the typical amount of pressure applied during intercourse they do recommend that Ohnut is not shared between different partners.
Best overall stroker
Type: Stroker | Material: Thermoplastic Elastomer and PC plastic | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Non vibrating
Strokers, which are generally designed for masturbation, are another popular category to explore for those buying starter sex toys. If you’re looking for one, the Tenga Flip Zero is worth the investment. Steve V. Rodriguez, the creator and host of the Talk About Gay Sex podcast, calls it his favorite toy. He adds that the toy’s inside has “all these grooves and bubbles and cutouts that are going to make you feel really good and let you explore different sensations your genitalia has never felt before.” It has another fan in Duran, who says that unlike other strokers, which typically have rigid plastic exteriors, this has a flexible one that responds to touch. “It gives people the opportunity to adjust and feel their own hand strength, or their partner’s hand strength, instead of just relying on the product,” he explains. Zane likes the Flip Zero, too, for the same reasons as Rodriguez. Because it has many different grooves and ridges, he says, it provides lots of different sensations. Zane adds that Tenga sells a few different models of the Flip — the Zero is the simplest — and if you want to experiment, you might consider one of its pricer vibrating models that he describes as “completely insane.” Due to the thermoplastic elastomer, the Tenga Flip Zero should be replaced after 50 uses.
Best less expensive stroker
Type: Stroker | Material: Thermoplastic Elastomer | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Non vibrating
Tenga’s low-priced, simple, and straightforward Egg is a great stroker for those on a budget or looking to dip their toes into such toys. Each Egg is ribbed inside, and although they’re designed to be single use, if you regularly wash an Egg with soap and water, you can extend its lifespan. “Incredibly discreet, super-cute, a really good gift, and it’s less than $10,” sums up Bard. While it’s known as a masturbation toy, it doesn’t have to be only used solo and that an Egg can also be a lot of fun to use with a partner. Procida agrees that the Egg is “always great to have in a drawer” and Duran is a fan, too, who often suggests throwing one in your bag for away trips because it’s disposable. “It’s just a little treat.” (If you want to stock up or get a few to give as gifts, the Eggs also come in a variety pack of six inside a cute, tiny carton).
Best open-design stroker
Type: Stroker | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
While so-called open strokers are great for all men, they are especially useful to those who can struggle to get aroused. Because of the open cuff, the pressure on the user is literally and emotionally reduced, says Azmi. You want bringing sex toys into the bedroom to be as seamless as possible and the great thing is that an open penis sleeve also accommodates flaccid penises, since it can be adjusted to make it tighter or looser. It has a vibrating plate that expertly targets the frenulum, she says, “a hot spot of nerve endings near the head of the penis.” Procida is also a fan of this frenulum-targeting device. “It’s a part of the penis that doesn’t get enough love,” he tells us of the frenulum. “Like Scottie Pippen, we know it’s great but not how great.” Procida, who uses it himself, describes it as powerful: “it felt like the world was exploding.” But, he cautions, it requires patience. As you get more turned on, “you’re going to want to stroke it,” but don’t — the device is far more effective if you don’t move it around, he says.
Best stroker for trans men
Type: Stroker | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
This stroker — designed in collaboration with renowned adult-film star, producer, and trans advocate, Buck Angel — is specifically tailored for trans men. It’s about “the same size as the Tenga Egg, but with a smaller opening,” says Duran. “It helps a lot of guys feel they’re getting the same effect of stroking or jerking off.”
Best stroker for partner play
Type: Stroker | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
One of the most innovative stroker toys around, the Manta is very popular among those in the know. “It’s unlike any other sex toy on the market,” says Lisa Finn, a brand manager and sex educator at Babeland says. “The soft, velvety silicone head is contoured to flex around the penis, and is designed with ridges along the inside of the wings that hold lubricant in place for added sensation.” Kit Richardson, buyer for The Museum of Sex and the MoSex Shop, is a big fan of the Manta as well, adding that it’s perfect if you’re looking to “intensify a BJ or masturbation routine.” It’s very slim profile also makes it ideal to use with a partner.
Best app-compatible stroker
Type: Stroker | Material: Thermoplastic Elastomer | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Non vibrating
The Handy is a newer, even-more-advanced stroker. It’s designed to operate independently once you’ve added lube, resulting in an experience that Procida describes as “basically a hand job or blow job machine.” It’s not the first time the concept has been attempted, Procida explains, but he says the resulting products have always been “really loud, with not enough grip, and no way to adjust the tightness.” The Handy, by contrast, is the “closest I’ve gotten to the feeling of a real hand or blow job without having one,” he says. Like other toys on this list, it can also be controlled using an app that your partner — or anyone else — can download, adds Procida.
Best air-suction stroker
Type: Stroker | Material: Silicone and ABS plastic | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Air suction
While expensive, the Arcwave Ion offers an incredible unique experience. The toy utilizes the same “pressure-wave” technology made famous by Womanizer’s air-suction toys. But while those toys focus on the clit, this stroker provides those sensations to the frenulum (the super-sensitive spot on the underside of the penis), making it unlike any other toy out there.
Best overall prostate toy
Type: Prostate toy | Material: Steel | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Non vibrating
While they might be seen as slightly more advanced, especially if you’re just starting out with sex toys, you should have a prostate toy in your rotation. “The P-spot can give you a different kind of orgasm than regular ejaculation,” explains Bard, who describes it as a “deeper, more filling orgasm,” and over time you can train your body to have a prostate orgasm as well as a regular orgasm, which “could be a blended orgasm that’s really kind of out of this world.”
While the nJoy Pure Wand is mostly known as a G-spot stimulator for women, it is a just-as-good prostate toy. The non-vibrating wand relies only on it’s a sculptural design and luxurious stainless-steel construction to deliver stimulation, with Play telling us that its long, curved shape allows you to enjoy self-pleasure without any arm strain. Finn is another fan: “Pure magic when it comes to prostate play!” The balls at either end “provide a firm, targeted pressure that’s unlike any other toy on the market,” adds Finn, who especially loves how the medical-grade stainless steel warms quickly with body heat. For more “temperature play,” she suggests running the wand under warm or cool water.
Best less expensive prostate toy
Type: Prostate toy | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Non vibrating
If you don’t want to spring for the nJoy Pure Wand, this toy from Aneros would be a less-expensive option. “The Aneros brand is synonymous with prostate massagers,” according to Duran. And for good reason: Before making adult toys, the company designed medical devices for prostate stimulation. He told us that some customers are initially skeptical about the Aneros toys, which can seem antiquated when compared to some of the more high-tech, silicone-clad options on the market. But Duran says this one “just links up perfectly, anatomically, to press the prostate.” Richardson is another fan of the Aneros brand, saying, who recommends it whenever anyone with a prostrate is looking for a beginner anal toy.
Best vibrating prostate toy
Type: Prostate toy | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
Lelo’s vibrating prostate massagers also came up a lot, and the company is definitely a favorite amongst sexperts and consumers alike. Justina Victoria, a men’s sex coach and the founder of the Sexual Mastery Center, pointed us to the vibrating Lelo Billy. Victoria calls it “less intimidating” than other prostate stimulators, making it a good choice for beginners or anyone just starting to explore.
Best dual-stimulation vibrating prostate toy
Type: Prostate toy | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
We-Vibe’s Vector has a double motor — one in the prostate part, and one underneath for the perineum. (To those who need to brush up on their anatomy, the perineum is the area between testicles and butt.) The best thing about this toy, according to Bard, is that the prostate part moves so you can adjust it to hit wherever yours is located, she says, noting that, like the nJoy Pure Wand, this can also be used as a G-spot toy. It has an accompanying app that allows you to customize the motors and hand over the controls to up to 10 people anywhere in the world, like the We-Vibe Pivot.
Best prostate toy for beginners
Type: Prostate toy | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Non-vibrating
This even less-expensive option is also great for a starter prostate toy because it’s simple, affordable, and perfect for wearing during different kinds of play. The bubbles give “an amazing anal bead-esque sensation,” Finn says, and the curved shape is ideal for targeting the prostate. Its all-silicone body means it should be easy to clean and care for, too.
Best overall anal toy
Type: Plug | Material: Steel | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Non vibrating
While prostate toys are designed to be inserted anally, there are some key differences between them and the more general anal toys such as beads and plugs. As Finn explains, prostate toys are often shaped with a curve that’s meant to really target that “hot-spot.” She adds, “Some folks with more sensitivity in this region may find that anything inserted anally stimulates their prostate, even small, non-curved anal toys,” but it really depends on the person. In short: Prostate toys and anal toys might overlap a bit in some of the sensations they provide, but they’re anatomically designed to target different areas.
The brand nJoy is perhaps most famous for its stainless-steel Pure Wand above, but it also makes a great anal plug. The smooth teardrop shape is easy to insert, while “the weight of the steel gives a delicious feeling of fullness.” Like its big brother, the Pure Plug’s steel body makes it a great choice for anyone looking to explore temperature play.
Best anal toy for beginners
Type: Plug | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating and non-vibrating
When it came to anal toys, the brand b-Vibe, which specializes in anal plugs, is extremely popular. A great place to start would be with the brand’s Anal Education set, because it not only includes everything one might need, including an enema kit, lube shooter, and plugs in three different sizes that are vibrating, non-vibrating, and weighted, as well as a how-to book Richardson describes as very gender neutral and easy to learn from. Education and communication is a must when it comes to safe and fun anal play, which is why a kit like this that takes out all of the guesswork and explains everything would be a great place to start. But those who have a firm foundation in anal play could go straight for b-Vibe’s famous weighted Snug Plugs (one of which is included in the education set). Duran describes a Snug Plug this way: “You won’t see it, but when it’s in the body, you feel those weights a little. It’s a great way to see if you’re into anal stimulation.”
Best vibrating anal toy
Type: Plug | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
This is a higher-tech anal toy from b-Vibe that offers something unique to the anal-play market. It simulates the sensation of rimming with its vibrating head and rotating beads in the neck and base. “So many nerves are concentrated at the anal opening, it’s an exquisitely sensitive spot, which is why rimming feels so good,” adds Finn. This toy comes with a remote control and it works equally well solo or with a partner. Procida, who has owned the toy for more than three years, notes that it also holds a charge for so long that he doesn’t even know where his charger is. (We’re showing the petite version here, but the toy also available in a larger standard size.)
Best anal toy for couples
Type: Plug | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
While you can absolutely use this vibrating plug solo, one of the Ditto’s main draws, is that it can be turned on by your partner, either locally with the remote control or from anywhere using WeVibe’s app. According to Archie Bongiovanni, a sexual-health educator and events coordinator at the Minneapolis store Smitten Kitten, the app is “perfect for long-distance relationships,” and the remote control “makes changing speeds and patterns during sex a breeze.” Plus, Bongiovanni says, it’s “petite enough for beginners and offers deep rumbly vibration.”
Best anal beads
Type: Beads | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
If you already have a set of non-vibrating beads, Lelo’s recently launched vibrating beads would be a fun new category to explore. It has eight different modes, super soft silicone for added comfort, and is completely waterproof. Because the toy features four beads that gradually increase in size, it’s also a good option for beginners.
Best couples vibrator
Type: Vibrator | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
If you’re having penetrative vaginal sex, the We-Vibe Sync 2 is a great toy to keep in your arsenal. The toy is a C-shaped vibe: One end is worn internally by the partner being penetrated, while the external part lays on the clit. Once it’s turned on, the partner wearing it will experience stimulation from penetration as well as from the toy at essentially every possible angle, while the other partner will also feel the vibes each time they enter the vaginal canal. What makes the Sync especially user-friendly is that the angle of the toy is adjustable, so it bends to more comfortably fit lots of different bodies. And it can be controlled with an accompanying remote or an app so you can play with the different settings without having to fiddle with the toy once it’s been placed.
Best wand vibrator
Type: Wand | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
The Magic Wand (formerly the Hitachi Magic Wand) has been regarded as the best wand vibrator on the market since its launch over 50 years ago. Today’s rechargeable version is cordless, plus it’s lighter and quieter than the original. If you’re only going to buy one vibe, this should be the one. The toy is also incredibly versatile and powerful, and you can also buy Hitachi wand attachments to explore different sensations with the wand on different body parts.
Best versatile toy
Type: Vibrator | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
A lot of companies are starting to make toys that aren’t necessarily “gendered” or prescriptive in how to use them. That versatility is part of what makes Clandestine’s “Mimic” so appealing. The Mimic resembles a stingray and, because of its curvature, it really works anywhere on the body. Richardson recommends it for stroking or holding during a hand job or blow job. It’s even great for a massage, too.
Best (less expensive) versatile toy
Type: Vibrator | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Vibrating
If you’re looking for a more affordable versatile vibrator that can work for many different types of bodies, I also recommend Wild Flower’s Enby. Like the Mimic, the whole thing is very flexible, so you can wrap it around a penis (using the textured side as a stroker), slide it between partners, or slip it into a harness.
Editor’s Note: The Enby 2 is currently out of stock, but you can sign up for a restock notification on Wild Flower’s site.
Best suction sex toy
Type: Air-suction | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Non vibrating
If you want to explore the world of air-suction (or air-pulse) sex toys, which are designed to mimic the sensation of oral sex, sex blogger and sex toy critic Cy Smash suggests the Satisfyer Curvy 2+ as her “top pick for transmasculine people with some bottom growth.” As she explains, it “has a roomier air pulse tunnel, and for under $40, it’s hard to beat the quality-to-cost ratio.”
Best strap-on harness
Type: Harness | Material: Nylon and velcro | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Non vibrating
If you’re looking for a strap-on, you can’t beat harnesses from SpareParts, whose styles range from boxer briefs to panties and all include inserts for vibrators as well as dildos. They also crucially use velcro “instead of those shifting buckles that just drive you crazy,” notes Frost.
Best dildo for strap-ons
Type: Dildo | Material: Silicone | Vibrating versus non-vibrating: Non vibrating
To pair with the harness above, check out dildos from New York Toy Collective. The brand’s most popular model, the Shilo, is made from latex-free silicone, and has a unique head designed for both G-spot and prostate stimulation. It also features two internal fabric pockets and comes in a range of skin tones and fun colors. They are a favorite of Frost’s, because “as far as internally and weight-wise, they feel like an actual penis.”
