Bella Puebla
Like El Bombon, Bella Puebla is among the modern new Mexican restaurants-that-never-were-bodegas that have opened lately on Roosevelt Avenue, from Woodside to Corona. In addition to the usual taco fillings, there are tacos arabes filled with al pastor, and a monster taco placeros that, for $8, loads up an outsize homemade tortilla with a boiled egg, cheese-filled chile relleno, sauteed hot chiles and onions, yellow rice, and fried potatoes. You’ve never seen anything quite like it.
Pastes Kiko's
Robert Siestema recently discovered that popular Mexican chain Pastes Kiko’s expanded to Elmhurst not too long ago. The menu at the only New York location of the chain has about 20 sweet and savory hand pies. Robert’s verdict: “The quality of the pastries and filling varies, but for Mexican food enthusiasts who track every new regional cuisine that arrives here for the first time, Pastes Kiko’s is a place you should visit”
