Fort Greene now has a shiny new food hall on the ground floor of one of the neighborhood’s luxury apartment buildings. Gotham Market at The Ashland — from the organizers of the popular Gotham West Market in Hell’s Kitchen — brings eight new dining options to area. The market at 590 Fulton St. is expected to up the food game around Barclays Center, near the cross section of Fort Greene, Downtown Brooklyn, and Boerum Hill.
The biggest player in the hall is proprietor of Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, John Stage, who will eventually have four different venues in Gotham Market, with a focus on chicken, pizza, breakfast, and cocktails. His Flip Bird serves both rotisserie chicken and fried chicken available as is, on sandwiches, and in salads. Rotisserie birds wear a variety of spices inspired by North African cuisine, served with a mild harissa sauce.
He’s also serving brick-oven, Neopolitan-style pizzas at Apizza Regionale. Options include a salsiccia (soppressata, mozzarella, sausage, caciocavallo cheese, onion agrodolce, shishito peppers), a meatball pie (sliced meatballs, caramelized onions, mozzarella, basil), and patata (potatoes, caramelized onions, aged gouda, rosemary). The menu also features a roasted beet and endive salad, bucatini carbonara, pork arancini, and olive oil cake.
Finally, Stage is behind the hall’s main drinks spot, Bar Granger, and a forthcoming breakfast menu called Egg at the Bird, which will serve breakfast sandwiches, frittatas, and fresh bread.
Though Stage is known for barbecue, Manhattan’s Mason Jar takes care of smoked meats at the Gotham Market, claiming a big corner of the building with two levels of seating. The Southern-inspired menu includes barbecue classics like pulled pork sandwiches, smoked chicken wings, mac and cheese, bourbon beef brisket, and coleslaw. It also offers bourbon-based cocktails and 30 beers on tap.
Next month, tapas bar Boqueria, which has three locations in Manhattan, will open in another corner of the market, with seating and full-service dining. The restaurant from chef Marc Vidal will eventually offer brunch and a dinner menu of classic tapas dishes like pan con tomate, patatas bravas, and ham croquetas.
One vendor in the market will rotate every four months, based on a program to highlight Brooklyn businesses. Crown Heights seafood restaurant, Crabby Shack is the first up, serving crab tacos, crab cake sliders, and crab grilled cheese from owners Fifi Bell and Gwen Niles.
Most of the vendors opened on Thursday, but the rest — like Egg and Boqueria — will make their debuts in the coming weeks. Take a look at a few more photos of the market below, and if you stop by, let us know what you think.
