Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - Chairman's Welcome

Welcome to the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department. I invite you to browse our web site and learn more about the exciting educational and research programs. We offer resident Master's and Doctoral degree programs in both Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and we provide distance learning programs, to several customers. We also conduct basic and applied research in a broad range of discipline areas, including Power and Propulsion, Space Systems, Autonomous Vehicles and Control, Materials, and Computational Mechanics.

The Department started as the founding department of the postgraduate division at the Naval Academy in 1909 and moved to Monterey in 1952. In the past 100 years many technologies have changed, but the Navy's and DoD's need for technical excellence in their officer corps has remained constant. Our mission is to provide our graduates with a solid foundation in the engineering fundamentals, and to give them the ability to think creatively and be technological leaders.
