WebP 2, the successor of the WebP image format is currently in development. It would make sense to start tracking the support among browsers.

Quite early, but good to keep the issue around.

Personally I think and hope JPEG XL will be the next raster image format, but time will tell of course.

I expect JPEG XL to be a significantly superior codec on most metrics.
