3 men arrested after a handgun is spotted in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Three men were arrested after one was seen brandishing a pistol in New Haven Friday night, according to police.

At 9:24 p.m., New Haven Police were dispatched to the intersection of Chapel Street and Kensington Street for a weapons complaint. A man in a red Infiniti was seen with a handgun.

After arriving on the scene police were able to locate the vehicle and attempted to detain several men in a fleeing crowd.

A man in the crowd attempted to run but was caught by police and identified as 25-year-old Robert Franklin from New Haven. A handgun was located in Franklin’s fanny pack.

Two other New Haven men with Franklin were found to have outstanding warrants. Atreyu Leggett, 24, and Tyrses Brown, 31, were both taken into custody.

Leggett had a warrant for violating probation and Brown for Harassment in the 2nd Degree.

As a convicted felon Franklin is barred from possessing a firearm or ammunition. He was charged with Weapon in a Motor Vehicle, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Carrying a Pistol without a Permit and Interfering with an Officer.
