Kilauea fountaining has died down as eruption pauses
HONOLULU (KHON2) — The fountaining that drew thousands of views on the USGS YouTube page died down Christmas morning, according to Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, as Kilaueaʻs latest eruption pauses once again.

The lava has been draining since the fountaining slowed and could be seen on the YouTube page.
The lava is draining back into the vent and HVO said that started occurring at the same time that summit tiltmeters started recording inflation rather than deflation.

“Seismic tremor also decreased markedly at the same time. The pattern was similar but more abrupt than the onset of the pause on Monday, December 23, that occurred between 3 and 4 p.m.,” HVO said in their daily status report.
This latest eruption lasted a little over 24 hours, which HVO said is twice the duration of the first eruptive episode.

An eruption could start again if the summit re-pressurizes over the coming days.
