JUNO BEACH – A familiar face is returning to the Town Council.

The council appointed John Callaghan on Dec. 17 to fill its vacant seat. The 69-year-old retired civil engineer previously served nine years on the council from 2005 to 2014.

“I thought I might fit the bill for someone that could help the council get to the finish line on some projects,” said Callaghan, who has lived in Juno Beach for 22 years and is a retired civil engineer. “I have no agenda. … I'm going to concentrate on what the other council members want to achieve and see how I can help.”

Callaghan, who applied for the seat along with five others, will be sworn in on Jan. 22. He will serve until his term expires in March 2026. He has not decided if he will run for election at that point.

“We are a happy group now that we have an extra council member,” Mayor Peggy Wheeler told Callaghan on Dec. 17. “I hope the town is happy as well. I know you've done an excellent job in the past.”

The seat Callaghan will take was left vacant in November when Jacob Rosengarten resigned, saying he took offense at another council member's comments.

Callaghan said the council’s priority right now should be selecting a new town manager after its former town manager, David Dyess, resigned. Council members have been deadlocked on a choice for a new town manager, so they decided to restart a nationwide search.
