Fort Macon State Park puts old Christmas trees to good use
ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. (WNCT) — As Christmas Day is now in the rear view, many people will have a decision to make on what to do with their real Christmas trees.
One state park in Eastern North Carolina helps make this decision a lot easier.
Park rangers at Fort Macon State Park helped load dozens of Christmas trees into the back of trucks, then hauled them down to various spots amongst beach to dunes where the trees will help keep some of the sand in and slow down coastal erosion.
One local couple stopped by to drop off their own tree.
“We enjoy it because we can even come back around March and walk the trails and you can still smell the cedar and it brings back good memories,” Augusta and Worth Baker of Atlantic Beach said. “They put it on the dunes and it builds the dunes up, which helps out a whole lot down here.”
