CACHE COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A father and his 11-year-old son were rescued on Monday, Dec. 30 after skiing out of bounds on Beaver Mountain, according to officials.

Lt. Roy Hall with the Cache County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release that officials received a satellite text to 911 just before 4 p.m. on Monday. The emergency text came after the father realized he and his son were lost.

The pair was originally skiing in-bounds but became lost near the Preston Hollow area, according to Hall. Beaver Mountain Ski Patrol was notified about the incident and began the search, but requested extra resources as nightfall approached.

“The dark that comes with the nighttime conditions in the back country presents its own unique challenges and dangers which must be faced by searchers and the lost alike,” the sheriff’s office said in the release.

Sheriff’s Deputies and a search and rescue team responded to the area after the call for more resources. Soon after, the father and son were located, and officials said they appeared “healthy and unharmed or injured.”

The duo was able to ski to Franklin Basin Road, as guided by members of the search and rescue team. From there, they were given a ride to the parking lot of the mountain and advised to stay in-bounds when skiing at Beaver Mountain.
