This holiday season, Mike Morse Law Firm and AAA are once again offering free alternatives to driving home under the influence.

Eleven people died in crashes occurring over the 2023 holiday period in Michigan, according to the Michigan State Police website. Nearly 41% of fatalities on Michigan roadways in 2023 involved alcohol and/or drugs.

"To help keep all roadway users safe during the winter holidays, there will be expanded enforcement with increased patrols from December 11, 2024, to January 1, 2025, with zero tolerance for those who drive impaired," the website said.

AAA takes impaired drivers and their vehicles home

AAA offers to take Michiganders — both AAA members and non-members — and their vehicles to a safe location within a 10-mile radius of pickup in its free Tow to Go program that starts 6 p.m. Dec. 24 and lasts until 6 a.m. Jan. 2.

AAA said appointments cannot be scheduled in advance, as the service is designed as a safety net for people who do not plan ahead.

The Auto Club Group has assisted more than 30,000 impaired drivers since Tow to Go’s inception more than 25 years ago, according to a AAA press release.

Tow to Go may not be available in rural areas or during severe weather conditions, and in some situations, AAA may need to make other arrangements to get an impaired individual a safe ride home, AAA said.

People in need of service can call (855) 2-TOW-2-GO or (855) 286-9246.
