GenBank Release 263.0 Now Available!

GenBank release 263.0 (10/19/2024) is now available on the NCBI FTP site. This release has 36.50 trillion bases and 5.13 billion records.

The current release has:

  • 251,998,350 traditional records containing 4,250,942,573,681 base pairs of sequence data
  • 3,745,772,758 WGS records containing 31,362,454,467,668 base pairs of sequence data
  • 948,733,596 bulk-oriented TSA records containing 812,661,461,811 base pairs of sequence data
  • 187,349,395 bulk-oriented TLS records containing 77,037,504,468 base pairs of sequence data
What’s new?

During the 58 days between the close dates for GenBank releases 262.0 and 263.0, the traditional portion of GenBank grew by 575,479,872,604 base pairs and by 349,314 sequence records. We updated 37,737 records during that same period. We added and/or updated an average of 6,673 traditional records per day!

Between releases 262.0 and 263.0, the WGS component of GenBank grew by 1,718,860,291,342 base pairs and by 176,057,401 sequence records. The TSA component of GenBank grew by 106,575,907,548 base pairs and by 192,826,219 sequence records. The TLS component of GenBank grew by 11,057,916 base pairs and by 27,397 sequence records.

The total number of sequence data files with this release decreased by 671, from 5,370 (release 262.0) to 4,699 (release 263.0). This reduction is the result of efforts to make the number of records per release more uniform.

Given this reduction, the usual per-division description of sequence file increases is not possible. We will resume providing that information with release 264.0.

Upcoming changes

The INSDC will begin to mandate inclusion of /geo_loc_name (formerly /country) and /collection_date for sequence submissions. This requirement is expected to take effect by the end of December 2024.

Additional information

For downloading purposes, please keep in mind that the uncompressed GenBank release 263.0 sequence data flat files require roughly 6,379 GB. The ASN.1 data files require approximately 2,361 GB.

For more information about GenBank release 263.0, see the release notes, as well as the README files in the GenBank and ASN.1 (ncbi-asn1) directories on FTP.
