Errollyn Wallen’s Peace on Earth (set to the composer’s own words) was originally published in 2006. For Tom Herring, conductor of the vocal group SANSARA, this “hauntingly beautiful expression of hope for a brighter future” seems more relevant than ever. Wallen creates simultaneously a sense of calm and unease through simple but effective harmonic clashes, brought even more to the fore here by the use of xylophone accompaniment instead of the original piano. “The first time I heard this piece I was immediately drawn in by the mesmerising accompaniment part and the striking simplicity of the vocal line,” Herring tells Apple Music Classical. “It’s one of those pieces that stays with you once you’ve heard it, and it feels like it’s always spinning away somewhere in my memory.”
