- "Won't there be hundreds of Sakaaran soldiers inside?"
"I think of Sakaaran as paper people." - ―Kraglin Obfonteri and Drax the Destroyer[src]
The Sakaarans, also known as Sakaarians, are a sentient insectoid race native to the planet Sakaar, which they share with a large number of stranded individuals of many different species. There are two varieties of Sakaarans: the humanoid variety and the insectoid variety.
As many of them resented the local Scrappers for disturbing their hives and emigrated off-world, Sakaarans also served as soldiers for hire, serving both Ronan the Accuser and Thanos, participating in both the Battle of Xandar and the Battle of Earth.
History[]
Origin[]
Living on Sakaar[]
The Sakaarans originated from Sakaar, a world formed by the Grandmaster, infamously known for being a place where individuals from across the galaxy, such as the Kronan Korg, the native Sakaaran Miek, Biff, Tasba, Hajo, Roscoe and Doug, found themselves stranded from their respective homeworlds and forced to compete in the Contest of Champions.[1]
War of the Nine Realms[]
Battle of Vanaheim[]
Some Sakaarans were part of the Marauders that attacked Vanaheim,[2] but the Asgardians came to defend the Vanirs from attack. Later the Marauders were defeated and taken to Asgard to be imprisoned in the Asgardian Dungeons by the Einherjar.[3]
Serving Ronan[]
Quest for the Orb[]
The Sakaarans were a close associate race to the Kree, and groups of Sakaaran mercenaries could often be found integrated into Kree military, as their loyalty was easily bought with carcasses for feeding and laying their eggs in.[2] Korath, a close ally of Ronan the Accuser, was known to command a large platoon of Sakaaran mercenaries. In 2014, Korath and his Sakaarans joined Ronan in his hunt for the Orb.[4] Korath and two Sakaarans found the Orb on Morag, just as Peter Quill had obtained it within the Temple Vault. They gave chase as Quill activated his helmet to escape.[5]
Battle of Xandar[]
Later, during the battle on Xandar, some Sakaraans soldiers went down to terrain to hunt Yondu, while others stayed at the Dark Aster defending it. In terrain, all Sakaraans were killed by Yondu, meanwhile the ones at the Dark Aster were killed by Star-Lord, Groot and Drax the Destroyer.[5]
Thor's Imprisonment[]
- "Loyal Sakaarians, Lord of Thunder has stolen my ship and my favorite champion. Sakaarians, take to the skies. Bring him down. Do not let him leave this planet."
- ―Grandmaster[src]
Numerous Sakaarans continued to remain loyal to Grandmaster and served as his subordinates on Sakaar, while others who were oppressed by his rule revolted against him.[1]
Alternate Universes[]
Serving Thanos[]
Battle of Earth[]
In an alternate 2014, an alternate Thanos became aware of the main universe and used reverse-engineered Pym Particles to transport himself, his weaponry and his allies, including the Sakaarans, through the Multiverse using the Quantum Realm in order to travel to the main universe.
Shortly after arriving, the Sakaarans, Outriders, Chitauri, and the Black Order were summoned onto the ruins of the Avengers Compound to fight in the battle against the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Asgardians, Ravagers, Wakandans, and Masters of the Mystic Arts. During the battle, a group of Sakaarans attacked Peter Quill but were killed by Gamora. The remaining Sakaarans disintegrated after Tony Stark used the Infinity Stones to end the battle.[6]
Characteristic Traits[]
One type of Sakaarans have Human-like postures. However, when viewed up close, Sakaarans are insectoid in appearance, possessing insect-like mandibles and jaws, arthropodal exoskeleton, and four fingers on each hand. Their blood is yellow.
The more insectoid variant of Sakaaran that Miek is a part of more closely resemble large pink grubs with little to no humanoid features. They also appear to lack the ability to vocalize in any coherent language, unlike their humanoid counterparts.

Trivia[]
- In the comics, there are two Sakaaran species, the Sakaaran Natives, who are very similar to their movie counterparts; and the Humanoid Sakaarans, who split into two ethnic groups: the red-skinned Sakaaran Imperials and the grey-skinned Shadow People.
- All the Sakaarans in Guardians of the Galaxy are voiced by James Gunn and his assistant, Simon Hatt.[7]
- In the subtitles of the first trailer for What If...?, a Sakaaran soldier was credited as a Kree instead of a Sakaaran.
- Korath is also misidentified as being a Sakaaran rather than a Kree in Phase Two: Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.
Behind the Scenes[]
- Originally, James Gunn wanted to introduce and give the role of evil minions to the Badoon. However, the cinematic rights to the Badoon were owned by the then-separately owned 20th Century Fox. Gunn eventually decided to replace them with the Sakaarans.[8]
