Promises is the second episode of the first season of Secret Invasion.
Synopsis[]
Fury grapples with the past and present.
Plot[]
In 1997, Nick Fury and Talos gathered a group of Skrull refugees in London, where Varra introduces Fury to Gravik, a young Skrull who lost his parents in the Kree-Skrull War. Addressing his fellow Skrulls, Talos reminds them of the faith he placed in Fury, while he offers the Skrulls to help him protect the Earth by using their powers. In exchange, he promises the Skrulls that he and Carol Danvers will help them find a new home. Several Skrulls, including Soren, took on Fury's offer and assumed human appearances to show their loyalty.
In the present day, Gravik and G'iah make their getaway amidst the Bombing of Vossoyedineniye Square, while Fury mourns the death of Maria Hill. The Police of Russia apprehends Fury and Brogan, who was still in the skin of Martin Wallace, shouting that he is an American. Talos helps Fury to get away from the police and the two leave Russia on the train, while evading the authorities. Fury inquires Talos about the destruction of Skrullos, and Talos admits that he secretly relocated a million Skrulls on Earth to escape from the Kree.
Fury is outraged by the reveal, but Talos reminds him that after the Blip and his relocation to the S.A.B.E.R. Space Station, Fury was not focused on his promise, so Talos had to protect his people. Fury does not take it well and claims that Talos had any chance to let Fury know, but chose to keep it a secret. Talos wanted to find a way for humans and Skrulls to co-exist, but Fury says that it was impossible and Gravik's actions were his proof, before separating ways with Talos. He then attends Hill's funeral, where her mother tells Fury to not let her daughter's death to be in vain.
The mass media around the world cover the terrorist attack in Moscow, in which Americans Against Russia were perceived as the perpatrators. The international community denounces the attack, while the concerns about Russia's retailiation against the United States of America are rising. Meanwhile, Gravik and G'iah go to the meeting of Skrull Council, which members had infilitrated the world elites and mass media. "Shirley Sagar" and "Sergio Caspani" speal against Gravik's actions, but he reminds them about Fury's broken promise and his mission to make the Earth a home for all Skrulls.
"Pamela Lawton" sides with Gravik and votes to appoint him as their new General, supporting his offensive against humans. "Sagar" is the only one who refused to support Gravik's war, and he he allows her to leave the Council in peace. She then contacts Talos, informing him about the current situation, so Talos asks her to set a meeting with Gravik. Upon returning to the New Skrullos, Gravik is cheered on by his people, but he only goes to the back of the compound, which made G'iah curious. She follows him and spots Pagon discussing the DNA experimentsa with "Rosa Dalton", as well as the machine they have designed.
James Rhodes attends an emergency security summit in London, regarding the terrorist attack in Russia and the presence of Fury and Hill on the scene. Rhodes dismisses any accusations, claiming that the United States have no interest in cooperating until any tangible evidence of their involvement is provided. Fury contacts Rhodes and arranges a meeting at Burner's Tavern, where Rhodes says that Fury not only increased the chances of World War III, but also allowed Russia to get most of the international community on their side. Fury tells Rhodes about the clandestine invasion led by Skrulls, telling Rhodes to let him handle the Skrulls. Frustrated, Rhodes fires Fury and strips him of any authority, but Fury tells him that it is not going to stop him.
Sonya Falsworth arrives at the FSB black site in Moscow and takes over Brogan's interrogation, being fully aware of who he actually was. Brogan resists Falsworth's attmpts to break him, but injected with an Interrogation Serum, he ultimately confesses that Gravik employed the Dalton family to build a machine that makes Skrulls stronger. Back in New Skrullos, G'iah finds out that Skrull Resistance had been collecting the DNA samples of various entities around the planet, including a Frost Beast from Jotunheim, Groot and Cull Obsidian. She hides it from Gravik, before they go to get Brogan out of captivity.
Gravik and Pagon attack the black site, killing several FSB operatives, while Falsworth makes her escape, now that she collected all information from Brogan. The Resistance then collects Brogan but upon reaching their safehouse, they find police crawling all over it, so they drive to the woods near New Skrullos instead. Gravik did not believe Brogan when he said that he did not tell his captors any truths, so he orders Pagon to execute Brogan.
Back in England, Fury takes a car from a storage facility and drives to a country house, where he puts on a wedding ring and reunites with Varra, his wife.
