Plot[]

Tony Stark neglects his personal needs and focuses on building Iron Man Armors. Meanwhile, someone going by Mandarin is attacking the United States of America. James Rhodes tells Stark that at each bombing, there is not bomb able to be found, but refuses to allow Stark to help. Meanwhile, Aldrich Killian meets with Pepper Potts and proposes Extremis, which would allow one to recode a person's DNA. Potts rejects the proposal, and Happy Hogan follows a man who accompanied Killian, Eric Savin. Savin gives a briefcase to Jack Taggart, who Hogan tries to intercept. However, Taggart suddenly explodes, hospitalizing Hogan.

The Mandarin takes credit for the explosion, angering Stark. Stark declares his intention to find the Mandarin. He analyzes the explosion and finds a similar one in Rose Hill, Tennessee. Maya Hansen appears to ask Stark for help with something, when the Mandarin's forces attack the mansion. Stark protects Potts and Hansen, then dons the Mark XLII armor, which flies him to Rose Hill on autopilot. Stark meets a young boy named Harley Keener, who agrees to help. Stark analyzes the explosion which occurred in Rose Hill, which was said to have been caused by Chad Davis. Stark meets with Davis' mother, who reveals that Davis and several other soldiers were part of an experiment. Savin and Ellen Brandt arrive and attack Stark, but he defeats them.

Stark realizes that the experiments and explosions were caused by Killian's organization A.I.M. while Hansen reveals to Potts that she is working with Killian. She kidnaps Potts while another agent kidnaps Rhodes. Stark tracks the Mandarin down to Miami and approaches him, only to learn that he is an actor. Stark gets kidnapped by Killian, who reveals that Potts had been given the Extremis formula.

Savin tortures Rhodes out of the Iron Patriot Armor and flies it to Air Force One. Rhodes tries to warn Vice President Rodriguez about the attack, but Rodriguez, who is working with Killian, ignores it. Savin forces President Matthew Ellis into the Iron Patriot Armor, which flies away. Stark saves the rest of the plane's crew and defeats Savin. Stark then goes to the Norco, where Killian plans to kill Ellis. Stark summons all of his armors to fight the Extremis Soldiers and tries to save Potts, but cannot. Stark confronts Killian, who gets killed by Potts. Stark hugs Potts and promises to get the Extremis out of her system, telling J.A.R.V.I.S. to destroy all of his suits. Rodriguez and the actor are arrested, and Stark gets the Extremis out of his system. Hogan awakens from his coma, and Stark sends gifts to Keener to thank him. Stark realizes that he has changed and will always be Iron Man.
