- "Captain Marvel. Defender of the cosmos."
- ―Baron Mordo[src]
Captain Maria Rambeau was a founding member of the Illuminati and the cosmic defender known as Captain Marvel.
Biography[]
Member of the Illuminati[]
Joining the Illuminati[]
Maria Rambeau, who was a very powerful hero infused with Kree DNA, joined an organization created by Doctor Strange. They coined themselves the Illuminati which was made up of Strange, Mister Fantastic, Black Bolt, Captain Carter, and Professor X.[1]
Infinity War[]
When Thanos waged war, the Illuminati banded together to stop him, except for Doctor Strange, who used the Darkhold to look for solutions in the Multiverse by Dreamwalking. Strange's method was successful, but he continued dreamwalking, which destroyed another universe so he confessed himself to the Illuminati. Strange renounced the Darkhold, and the group found the Book of Vishanti, which they used to defeat Thanos. Rambeau, along her teammates, witnessed the execution of Strange by Black Bolt. Rambeau, along with the rest of the group, covered up the event, making it seem as Strange was killed in the battle with Thanos, preserving his status as hero.[1]
An Alternate Strange[]
One day, Baron Mordo, who took Doctor Strange's seat on the Illuminati, arrived with a prisoner: another version of Doctor Strange. The Illuminati oversaw a trial for Strange as Mordo introduced the group. Strange tried to argue that Scarlet Witch was threatening the multiverse, but Rambeau arrogantly said that they could handle the witch. Mister Fantastic then said Strange was the biggest threat to the multiverse. Professor X arrived and showed Strange what happened to their Strange.[1]
Battle at the Illuminati Headquarters[]
- "Get the hell out of my universe!"
- ―Captain Marvel to Scarlet Witch[src]
Suddenly, Scarlet Witch broke into the Illuminati Headquarters. Rambeau and the rest of the Illuminati confronted her outside Christine Palmer's lab. Rambeau and Captain Carter witnessed the murders of Black Bolt and Mister Fantastic as they decided to attack Maximoff. Rambeau took flight and repeatedly fired powerful photon blasts toward Maximoff that it almost damaged her force field. Rambeau's photon blast was so powerful that it sent both Maximoff and Carter flying into a wall.
Maximoff then eventually lifted a statue and threw it at Rambeau, crashing her into a wall. After the death of Captain Carter, Rambeau rises enraged as she launched toward Maximoff bursting through debris. Rambeau and Maximoff lifted off into the air as Maximoff siphoned off her power and blasted her with a huge wave of energy, sending her flying across the Headquarters and de-powering her. Maximoff took the opportunity to take another statue and slam it on top of Rambeau, crushing her to death.[1]
Personality[]
- "Oh, we can handle your little witch if she decides to dreamwalk."
- ―Captain Marvel to Doctor Strange[src]
Captain Marvel was a rather arrogant individual who underestimated others, as she believed she could take care of the Scarlet Witch. Rambeau is shown to be somewhat aloof and cold, even to those she works with, as she simply raised a brow when Black Bolt accidentally killed himself by blowing his brains out and didn't seem too concerned when Mister Fantastic was brutally murdered shortly after. Another example of her lack of care for her teammates was when she threw a pillar at Scarlet Witch and indirectly hit Captain Carter as well and thought nothing of it afterwards.
