November 13, 2024 The 2025 Maize Genetics Meeting has been announced! Financial aid applications are due on December 2nd, while registration and abstract submissions are due on January 8th.
October 22, 2024 We've recently collaborated with researchers to provide variant data from a diverse set of 1,498 inbred lines, traditional varieties, and teosintes. Using a standardized variant-calling pipeline, we analyzed whole-genome sequencing data against B73v5. We've also developed a web-based tool to explore the hundreds of millions of variant sites. We're now seeking input on which maize accessions to include in the next round of variant calling using this survey.
October 10, 2024 Ed Buckler of the USDA-ARS has been chosen as the 2025 recipient of The Barbara McClintock Prize for Plant Genetics and Genome Studies by the Maize Genetics Cooperation for his contributions in genomic diversity in maize and genetic architecture of complex traits; innovative design of molecular, and statistical approaches to identify genes underlying agronomic, evolutionary, and nutritional traits; and systematic development of informatic platforms.

MaizeMine v1.4 retires on July 31, but use the feedback button at the top-right to let us know if this could be an issue for you.

February 12, 2024 With great sadness, we announce the passing of Peter Rogowsky on February 7th, 2024. Peter was deeply involved in maize research and in plant science management at INRAE, was a member of the Maize Genetics Conference Steering Committee (2007 - 2009), and did pioneering work on the maize kernel development (e.g. the discovering of the embryo surrounding region). He was a very highly valued colleague, and great mentor and friend. He will be sorely missed.

October 11, 2023 Caroline Dean of the John Innes Center has been chosen as the 2024 recipient of The Barbara McClintock Prize for Plant Genetics and Genome Studies by the Maize Genetics Cooperation for her contributions in epigenetics, the regulatory role of non-coding RNAs on chromatin, and stochasticity of decision making at the cellular level.
September 26, 2023 MaizeGDB is excited to release PanEffect - a resource to explore variant effects across the maize pangenome. PanEffect allows users to visualize over 550 million possible amino acid substitutions in the B73 maize reference genome and also to observe the effects of the 2.3 million natural variations in the maize pan-genome. Pre-print is available at BioRxiv.
August 30, 2023 It is with sadness that we share the news that Ron Phillips passed away on Friday, August 25. Ron worked for over 40 years at the cutting edge of maize genetics and tissue culture research. Ron mentored scores of graduate students, postdocs, and visiting scientists. Under his guidance, many went on to successful careers in academia, industry, and government. Ron received many awards and honors for his efforts including Regents Professor, election to the National Academy of Sciences, the Wolf Prize, and he was the University of Minnesota's first McKnight Presidential Chair in Genomics. He also taught a popular and engaging cytogenetics course to graduate students during his career.

April 21, 2021 MaizeGDB is sad to report the passing of Dr. David F. Weber, retired professor of biology at Illinois State University, on April 15, 2021. Dave trained with Marcus Rhodes and became an excellent cytologist, and was known for pairing traditional cytogentics with modern molecular biology approaches. Dave will be missed by research colleagues and family alike.

March 24, 2021 MaizeGDB is sad to announce that our colleague, Jim Brewbaker, passed away peacefully March 15, 2021. He had a long, productive, and inspiring career. Dr. Brewbaker created the foundation germplasm for the tropical sweet corn seed industry and trained the leading sweet corn breeders in the tropics.

January 17, 2021 MaizeGDB is happy to host the second round of data for B73 RefGen_v5 and the 25 NAM founder genomes from the NAM Sequencing Consortium! This release includes transposable element annotations, methylation and ATAC data, new gene model annotations, structural variation data, and more! These data can be found on the NAM JBrowse browsers, as well as on our FTP site and our CyVerse instance.

January 24, 2020 The genome assembly and annotation for the Quality Protein Maize (QPM) variety, K0326Y is now available at MaizeGDB. This cultivar was developed in South Africa by Hans Geevers and is widely used in QPM research. The assembly and sequencing was done by Wenqin Wang and Yongrui Wu at the Shanghai Institute for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
January 9, 2020 In coordination with the NAM sequencing consortium, the assembly and annotations of B73 RefGen_v5 and the 25 NAM founder genomes are now available at MaizeGDB. This release has 26 new genome pages, over 1 million new gene model pages, 206 new files in the FTP, and 134 additional BLAST targets. In addition, MaizeGDB created JBrowse genome browsers for each genome with over 1,000 total tracks of data across the 26 browsers.
December 26, 2019 An announcement for the curator position with the USDA/ARS Maize Genetics Cooperation Stock Center has been posted on USA JOBS. The application period closes Tuesday, January 21, 2020. This is a support scientist position for someone with experience in maize genetics research, mutant phenotypes evaluation and/or germplasm maintenance.

May 7, 2014 Anthony (Tony) J Pryor, (CSIRO Plant Industry, Australia) has passed away. He was a graduate student of Drew Schwarz and amongst his many contributions to science were cloning of the maize ADH gene and cloning of the first cereal rust resistance gene, the maize Rp1 gene. June 4, 2013 The B73 RefGen_v3 assembly is now available on the MaizeGDB Genome Browser and at Ensembl Plants. Currently, this is a bare assembly with no other tracks. Structural annotations (gene models) are anticipated to become available within 4 weeks (pending GenBank approval). Other genome annotations (e.g., transposon insertions, SNPs, and expression glyphs) will become available as tracks on the genome browser starting later this month. Cooperators who have contributed data for display within the MaizeGDB Genome Browser are encouraged contact us via feedback links to determine how best to project from RefGen_v2 onto v3 or realign data to the new assembly.
