julia update - december 2021
1) 2021 review and 2022 preview
2) signed copies of 99 Erics and Outspoken for sale
Hey folks, I hope this email update finds you well! Since it's "that time of year," I thought I'd round up all my writings from 2021 for your potential reading pleasure. Also, I am once again offering signed books for sale — see the end of this message for details. They make great gifts, or else you can snag one for yourself!
1) 2021 review and 2022 preview
So I spent most of my 2021 (as well as 2020) working on my next book, which I'm happy to announce will be out next year! In fact, the next email update I send will most likely include a detailed description and pre-ordering information — so stay tuned for more details...
In the meantime, I was able to publish eight Medium essays over the last year. The most recent one is On Being Explicitly Named in a Violent “Gender Critical” Manifesto — it is (unfortunately) my response to something that actually happened to me last month.
Another recent essay is Autogynephilia and Anti-Transgender Activism. It chronicles anti-trans activists' increasing promotion of Ray Blanchard's debunked "autogynephilia" theory in order to smear trans women en masse as supposed "perverts" and "sexual predators."
Both those essays dovetail with an essay from earlier this year — Transgender People, Bathrooms, and Sexual Predators: What the Data Say — which compiles research showing that transgender people are victims (not perpetrators) in sex-segregated spaces, and chronicles past campaigns to smear other minority groups (e.g., gays and lesbians, people of color, Jewish people) as potential "sexual predators."
For Bisexual Visibility Week, I published Bomb, which is a chapter from my "award-winning" book 99 Erics: a Kat Cataclysm faux novel. It humorously defuses many of the assumptions people face upon coming out as bisexual. It also critiques the "stereotype trap," as well as authors who turn their LGBTQ+ characters' identities into "plot twists."
I don't usually write about TV shows and pop culture, but I did just that in Here’s why some people find the Loki-Sylvie romance unsettling. Hint: the answer (or at least one of the answers) is unconscious transphobia...
Here are a few other Medium essays from the last year (all of which were shared in a previous update):
All of these are "friend links" that bypass Medium's paywall – so feel free to read them all for free! I am able to write and publish these pieces for free thanks to my Patreon supporters, so please consider supporting me there (for as little as $1 per month)!
Finally, I was recently interviewed by Current Affairs for a podcast on Why All The Anti-Trans Arguments Are Bogus. That link will take you to a lengthy transcript of the interview; the podcast itself is behind their Patreon paywall, but if you follow Current Affairs, you can access it here. As with all live off-the-cuff interviews, my phrasing isn't always perfect (haha), but we discuss many important issues that anti-trans activists typically ignore or omit in their arguments.
2) signed copies of 99 Erics and Outspoken for sale
I am once again making signed copies of two of my books for sale! (for $25, shipping included, provided that the address is within the U.S.)
From recent updates, y'all are likely familiar with 99 Erics: a Kat Cataclysm faux novel — click that link for excerpts, book reviews, praise, as well as the two LGBTQ+ book awards it won.
Outspoken: A Decade of Transgender Activism and Trans Feminism collects many of my trans-themed writings from 2002-2014, including my early slam poems, and essays written contemporaneously with my books Whipping Girl and Excluded.
All of the details (including signing instructions if you want me to make it out to someone) can be found on the STUFF TO BUY page of my website. Alternatively, all of my books are available for purchase (sans signing) from all the usual online outlets, or can be ordered directly from your local independent bookstore...
That's it for now. And remember, between updates, you can always check out:
